Columbia GS Grad Speaker Stole Patton Oswalt's Joke

Comedian Patton Oswalt has gone on the warpath against one Brian Corman, Columbia University's School of General Studies valedictorian, who blatantly ripped off one of Oswalt's jokes during his graduation speech almost verbatim, passing it off as an anecdote from his own experience. Embarrassing. After discovering the joke theft, Oswalt took to the Twitter: "Congrats to Columbia University valedictorian Brian Corman! Great speech." We're pretty sure that was meant to be sarcastic. (Watch the video of Corman's delivery, starting at 33:56, and Oswalt's original, below.) more ›

Megan Mullally Kills Play After Failing to Get Patton Oswalt Fired

Megan Mullally Kills Play After Failing to Get Patton Oswalt Fired

We love Patton Oswalt over here, and were looking forward to his Broadway debut in Terrence McNally’s affecting Fire Island comedy Lips Together, Teeth Apart. Oswalt had already proven his acting ability on film with his performance in Big Fan, and we had no doubt that, like most talented comedians, he'd bring something special to more diverse roles. But Megan Mullally, his co-star in Lips Together, Teeth Apart, wasn't convinced, and after she failed to persuade esteemed director Joe Mantello to fire Oswalt, she quit. DRAMA! more ›

Patton Oswalt, Comedian

Patton Oswalt, Comedian

Patton Oswalt has built himself up as one of the most well-respected stand-ups in his twenty-plus year career. He is a definitive "comic's comic," always refining and plugging away at his stand-up act—his most recent special being played on Comedy Central. Today marks the opening of his first star turn as the lead role in the darkly comic Big Fan, written and directed by the same screenwriter who wrote The Wrestler. Oswalt carries the film through it's brooding, modernist character study of a Staten Island Giant fanatic who lives with his mother and spends his work days perfecting his night speeches made as a caller to a local sports talk radio show. The film will be a strange experience for Giant fans as the tale it tells inadvertently ended up mirroring the team's Plaxico Burress situation last season in a bizarre number of ways. more ›

Patton Oswalt, Comedian and Actor

The Comedians of Comedy are performing at Irving Plaze on October 27th at 6 and 10:30 PM. Both shows will be hosted by Patton Oswalt, who will be joined by Brian Poshein, Maria Bamford, Eugene Mirman, John Mulaney, and some yet to be announced special guests. Last year's surprises included performances by David Cross, Nick Swardson, Jon Benjamin, and Jon Glaser. With such a line up, the event is certainly a night not to be missed. Gothamist got a hold of Patton to get his opinion on some of his past roles, politics, and where he likes to eat when he's in town. more ›

Caught on Tape: More Rats!

Caught on Tape: More Rats!

Vynl, 507 Columbus AvenueOn three separate nights cameras caught the critters feasting "on scraps that were left on the dirty kitchen floor and climbing over crates of glassware" at Da Silvano's (pictured top left). The owner there said the problem was caused by nearby construction and recent renovations and claimed he will be throwing out everything edible in the restaurant and starting fresh. Ah, not even the celeb hot spots can escape the wrath of roaches and rodents. more ›

Uncabaret in New York, The Return of Neutrino and ECNY

Uncabaret in New York, The Return of Neutrino and ECNY

In L.A., Un-Cabaret has been a fixture of the alternative comedy scene for over a decade. Founder Beth Lapides started it after growing tired of what mainstream stand-up comedy was offering, and brought in friends over the years like David Cross and Bob Odenkirk, Michael Patrick King, Scott Thompson and Patton Oswalt to break new ground and showcase their material. Today it has grown into a tiny empire with live shows, writing classes and contests for aspiring writers. This week several venues around our fair city play host to The Uncabaret Micro-Festival where never before seen TV pilots will air and comedy workshops will be held, and for comedy nerds (redundant, I know) the lineup is pretty great. more ›
