Expectations Vary for Local Teams as NHL Season Begins

The 2009-2010 NHL season started last night, but our three local squads begin play tonight and tomorrow. How will the teams fare this season? Each team — the Devils, Rangers and Islanders — have very different expectations heading into the season.

  • Rangers 4 Montreal 3 (OT): The Rangers and Montreal traded goals throughout a fast-paced and entertaining game. The Rangers recorded 42 shots, but Carey Price was outstanding in net, turning away 39 of them. Price’s luck ran out in the shootout as all three Rangers scored. Chris Drury provided the game-winner.
  • Carolina 6 Islanders 2: The Islanders stood in for about ten minutes before Carolina blew their doors off. After three goals in the first, Carolina added two more in the second to make the rest of the game a formality. New York added a goal in the third and got into a huge fight to keep the remaining crowd interested.

    • Thunder 107, Knicks 99: How did the Knicks follow up their upset over the Celtics? By dropping an absolute egg against the NBA's worst team. How do the Thunder (now 5-30) shoot 52.8 percent from the floor? How do the Knicks shoot only 39.8 percent? The Knicks gave up 63 points in the first half, which is embarrassment enough. Al Harrington had 21 points off the bench. Thursday brings a visit to Dallas. Maybe they'll show up for that game.
    • Hurricanes 3, Devils 2: This game wasn't this close. New Jersey didn't score until 12:12 had gone by in third period. That's when Paul Martin scored. Patrik Elias scored with 21.5 seconds remaining. Scott Clemmensen made 25 saves but wasn't good enough.

    • Nets 121 Mavericks 97: Devin Harris made Jason Kidd look bad Friday and he made the Mavericks look even worse. Harris scored 41 points and added 13 assists as he brought the Izod Center crowd to its feet multiple times. No more so than when he left the game and the fans erupted in “Thank you Cuban” chants, thanking Dallas owner, Mark Cuban, for making the Kidd-Harris swap.

    • Devils 8 Rangers 5: Don’t let the score fool you, this game could have gone either way. New Jersey jumped out to a 5-1 lead and then saw it all disappear. New York tied it up at 5 thanks to a goal from Ryan Callahan, but they only enjoyed their comeback for 11 seconds. That’s all it took for Patrik Elias to convert off of a terrible defensive sequence and New Jersey was back in front. And, they added two more goals that capped a terrible night for the Rangers’ defense and Henrik Lundqvist. The game also included numerous fights and scraps, too bad both teams have to wait until December 27th before they face each other again.

    • Montreal 6 Rangers 2: It only took 24 hours for the Rangers to lose their momentum again. Then again, maybe they were a bit tired from Wednesday night’s win. Whatever the reason, they made far too many mistakes and gave up way too many chances in their own end. A lesser team might have been unable to capitalize on those mistakes, but Montreal is a good team and they pounced all over them. They jumped out to a 4-0 lead and they cruised home to an easy win, blitzing Henrik Lundqvist with 39 shots in the process.

  • Hornets 107, Nets 96: Chris Paul looks like a quicker and better-shooting version of Jason Kidd. The Hornets' young star put up 25 points and 16 assists as the Hornets won this one easily. Richard Jefferson led all scorers with 27, but Nenad Krstic's 14 points and 11 rebounds had to bring a smile to Lawrence Frank's face. Devin Harris, still getting adjusted, had 17 points and eight assists, but he was clearly the second-best point guard on the court.
  • Devils 3, Senators 2 (OT): Brian Gionta put on in the net in overtime as the Devils rewarded Martin Brodeur for his 16th straight start. Patrik Elias, thinking it was better to give than to receive, had three assists.
    • Clippers 103 Knicks 94: New York Giants Sam Madison, Kevin Dockery and R.W. McQuarters showed up for the game, which provided a great diversion from what happened on the floor. Leading 60-51 at halftime, the Knicks were blown away in the third quarter, getting outscored 28-14 as the Clippers cruised to the win.

  • Atlanta 104 Nets 92: Jason Kidd only took nine shots, scoring five points while three Hawks scored more than 20.
  • New York doubled that lead in the second period thanks to some great work from the Dawes-Dubinsky-Prucha line. Prucha and Dawes got the goals and two points for their efforts, but Dubinsky had a wonderful game as well. Lundqvist lost the shutout in the third, but Montreal never seriously threatened and the Rangers earned two huge points.

    • Devils 4, Hurricanes 1: Martin Brodeur only needed to make 20 saves in this one. The Devils have now won seven of nine. Travis Zajac, Brian Gionta and Sergei Brylin all had goals, but it was Patrik Elias scoring the game-winner for the second straight time. They could have had six goals had they not hit the post twice. That fatigue-induced slow start is a distant memory for New Jersey, which leads the Atlantic Division.
    • Flyers 6, Rangers 2: When Ryan Hollweg scored two early goals, something had to tell the Rangers this wasn't a typical game. Then, poof! Bad news comes in threes, and it came in threes times two at the Garden. Henrik Lundqvist made it the whole game despite allowing one sixth of all the shots he faced in. Montreal visits New York on Saturday night.

    • Devils 2, Sabres 1 (SO): Aggressive play cost the Devils the win in regulation, but Martin Brodeur, Brian Gionta and Patrik Elias too center stage in the shootout to allow the Devils to continue their home dominance. They have picked up 21 of 22 points at their new Prudential Center in the last 11 games. Things didn't look so rosy when Jason Pominville tied the game with 1:47 to go, but the Devils bounced back. They held out during Buffalo's dominance of the extra session to make use of Brodeur in the shootout.
    • Lightning 5, Rangers 3: Spotting the Lightning a three-goal lead didn't seem to be a good move. After Jaromir Jagr opened the scoring, Tampa Bay struck for four straight, and the Rangers couldn't recover.
    • Canucks 3, Islanders 2 (SO): The Islanders can't be happy they traveled all the way to the Pacific Northwest only to see that second point disappear after a goal between the legs of Rick DiPietro. But he can't be blamed for this loss. His 43 saves were the only reason the Islanders made it to the extra session and the shootout.

The Lakers cruised to a 70-45 lead and then had to hang on against a Knicks’ rally that happened with the unit of Nate Robinson, David Lee, Malik Rose, Jared Jeffries and Jamal Crawford playing most of the minutes. What changes are coming? It’s hard to say, but a good start would be splitting Eddy Curry and Zach Randolph up. Let’s just hope Isiah doesn’t start making trades.

For some inexplicable reason, the NHL has scheduled all three local clubs to start their playoff chase tonight and to overlap with each other most nights. Because of that, fans of the various teams should get to know this website to figure out where they can watch the games.

The Islanders controlled the game for most of the first two periods and took a 1-0 lead off of a goal by Simon. But, the Rangers rallied and the newest Ranger, Paul Mara, scored off of the power play to tie the game at one.

-Wizards 113 Knicks 102: Well, Isiah and the Knicks didn’t take long to wipe out any good feelings over their last game. Facing a pathetic Washington team, New York gave a lackluster effort again in the loss.

Fans will be able to watch hockey again tonight for the first time in sixteen months as every team in the National Hockey League takes to the ice. Before turning on the game, it might be a good idea to review some of the multiple rule changes that will be in place for the 2005-2006 season.
