The man who was found dead, bound and gagged, in his West 22nd Street apartment on Friday night, was remembered as a kind and generous neighbor who was a devoted churchgoer. The killing of John Laubach, 57, is being investigated by police, who found that there were no signs of forced entry to the Chelsea apartment.

Today In Sad Animal Stories: Lost Parrot, Dead Iguana And Otter Carcass
We're getting inundated with sad animals news today. First, the above photo was sent to us by Kendra Srebro, who tells us this iguana was "spotted on Vandervoort Place between Flushing and Thames. Its eyes were closed and it wasn't moving. I was running to get the train to work so I didn't have time to inspect further... I'm worried it is still alive and its consequential low body temperature has just lulled it into sedation."
Have You Seen (Or Heard) This Missing Opera-Singing Parrot?
Mozart lovers, have you heard anything strange lately? The sweet sounds of The Magic Flute as filtered through...a parrot, perhaps? If so, you're not actually crazy—an opera-singing parrot has gone missing in Brooklyn, and her devastated owner needs your help finding her!
Hot Red Bird On The Loose In The East Village
Are you missing a beautiful rare red bird? A reader sent in the above photo of the bird-in-question today, saying they had found it outside their apartment building on East 2nd Street between 1st and 2nd Avenues. They write: "Bird seemed quite agitated and freaked out, but with the help of a female neighbor we were able to get the bird inside and are now trying to find its owner/what to do with it."

It looked pretty out of place..."
Parrot Poachers Picking Off Brooklyn Birds

Pepper The Parrot Gone Missing On UWS
Ready to find yet another missing parrot? Last year a man captured an escaped macaw in Midtown; earlier this year a woman was reunited with her bird Gracie, who flew the coop in Park Slope; and now, Pepper the pet parrot has gone missing!
Park Slope Parrot Escapes, Returns
This isn't really as exciting as the recent MIdtown macaw rescue, but last week the Brooklyn Paper spread the word that an African Grey Parrot had gone missing near Flatbush Avenue in Park Slope. The bird—named Gracie—belonged to Lora Myers, who kept him as a pet for 12 years.
Man Saves Escaped Macaw in Midtown
One New York City parrot had an exciting weekend, and the NY Times recounts the tale of the red-tailed macaw. Seems it escaped from an office in Hell's Kitchen while its owner was vacationing, which left an employee's boyfriend, Frank Guido, on a wild bird chase for 26 hours. The paper reports back saying he pounced "from rooftop to windowsill to billboard, in sun and rain," trying to capture it. Finally, yesterday afternoon he trapped it on some scaffolding. The 55-year-old was left to capture the bird on his own because after calling the NYPD, FDNY and Animal Control... no one came to help. He told the Times, “They don’t help. Nobody cares.” The NYCACC suggests that if you lose your pet, you contact the closest shelter—but has no advice listed on their site for an escaped bird that you can't get your hands on. Maybe just take PETA's advice and don't get your hands dirty in the world of exotic animal trade.
