Remember that little girl who got dressed up like a prostitute by her mother for a beauty pageant? This is what happens when you put a show like "Toddlers & Tiaras" on the television box, America. Anyway, the 3-year-old got a verbal smackdown from 5-year-old pageant queen Isabella Barrett recently. TMZ reports:
5-Year-Old Trashes 3-Year-Old While Departing NYC "Spray Tan Sesh"
Parenting 101: Don't Dress Your Kid Up As A Prostitute
On a scale of reality television shows about toddler pageantry and "virgin" bikini waxes, how bad is this? A mom on TLC's Toddlers and Tiaras dressed up her three year old child as Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman. And not just the cleaned-up, post-kissing on the mouth, being allowed to shop in the fancy store Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman, the toddler even wore her classic streetwalking garb.
Live From Staten Island: Miss New York Bikini Pics!
Wait, what's the difference between Miss Manhattan and Miss New York City? Anyway, this is the first time in history that the Miss New York pageant is being held in New York City. Last we checked in on the festivities was back in 2008, when Miss Brooklyn was actually from Manhattan, where she had just moved to from down south—she didn't take home the tiara at the big game. Whatever, Miss Twin Peaks is the only pageant worth winning.
Will You Be Crowned The New Miss Twin Peaks?
This Sunday a Brooklyn venue will be transformed into Twin Peaks, or as the organizers behind the event say: into "a creepy logging town in rural Washington, where a beautiful naked corpse awaits discovery." We're told there will be themed cocktails (the White/Black Lodge, the Red Room, and the Leland Palmer), trivia, a screening of the best parts of season two, a cherry stem tying contest, Twin Peaks Burlesque, doughnuts, coffee, cherry pie, owls, a hidden Laura Palmer Barbie doll, and a Miss Twin Peaks pageant! Bonus: being transported to a David Lynch fantasy world will only cost you 5 bucks. Get your dance moves ready, ladies.
How's Everyone's Waffle Day Going?
As we all know, today is National Waffle Day! The kind of holiday that only Homer J. Simpson would celebrate—well, him and the Wafels & Dinges set. Today the Belgian waffle truck celebrated by giving out free waffles to those who handed over a waffle-inspired drawing (they'll be at 52nd and Lexington until 4:30, then you're left with less appetizing options). They also hosted a pageant earlier, and the winners were crowned and gifted with a year in free Wafels! The king is 51-year-old retired poet Jonathan Leiter (hailing from Staten Island), and his queen is 23-year-old Jasmine Hashi of Brooklyn. Congrats to the new waffle royalty—but on Waffle Day, everyone's a winner... or something.
A New Miss Brooklyn Has Been Crowned
Two years ago Miss Brooklyn hailed from Manhattan, where she had just moved from Virginia. This year, Alabama-native Mallory Hagan, allegedly living in Bedford-Stuyvesant, has taken the crown with less controversy. The 21-year-old won the pageant on Sunday, where she beat out nine other contestants. She declared,“As Miss Brooklyn, I want to leave a legacy for this organization rather than myself. If I can convince one girl to be confident enough to be interested in competing... my legacy will be my investment.” (The competition really does need more contestants!) Hagan will be taking time off from Brooklyn College to fill her pageant-winning duties and work towards becoming the next Miss America.
Miss G Train Hails From Queens
Miss G Train has officially been crowned. Last Thursday the City Reliquary held their pageant for the line, and fittingly the evening was met with some hold ups — the Brooklyn Paper reports that one judge was delayed, and two contestants never even showed up.
The G Train Gets A Pageant
It's amazing that anyone wants to celebrate the G train, but the NY Post is reporting that Williamsburg's City Reliquary is hosting a pageant to do just that. They report that the museum and civic organization will hold the pageant on November 19th in conjunction a photography exhibit documenting past Miss Subways winners.
Former Miss Subways Reminisce
Yesterday some Miss Subways Pageant alum gathered for a little reunion at Ellen’s Stardust Diner (owned by former pageant winner Ellen Hart). The pageant ran from 1941 to 1977, and was revived for just one year in 2004 (under Ms. Subways). CityRoom looks at the groundbreaking nature of the organization, which crowned a Brooklyn College student as its first black winner in 1948 (she was even honored by Thurgood Marshall). The site notes that "Some historians point to Miss Subways as an important—though mostly symbolic—turning point for racial integration. The photograph of Miss Subways was on thousands of subway cars each month, and black activists believed that image of a black woman would send a powerful media message." Yesterday, the ladies talked about the current state of the subways, one declaring "The subway system is still a mess, and the MTA has a lot of nerve to want more money." Another winner from the '40s told the NY Post that back in her day "It cost a nickel to ride the subway or get a cup of coffee."
Williamsburg's Beauty Pageant Unironically Turns Ugly
Remember the Mr. & Miss Williamsburg Pageant? Well, it happened, and one contestant reports back that the winner was victorious by drinking a PBR and simultaneously taking her panties off from under an American Apparel romper. Also...this crowned hipster jewel was from New Jersey. But wait, the scandal goes even deeper! She notes that Misha Calvert, head of the pageant (pictured), "instructed us not to tell anyone from the press that the whole applicant process was rigged" and that the Colt 45 story was a fabricated publicity stunt (shocking!). While this particular contestant and Calvert are no longer friends on Facebook (harsh!), the former did learn something: intellect cannot beat taking off one's underwear whilst donning an American Apparel romper, and "a large part of being a hipster in Williamsburg is flashing your vagina to the entirety of New York media."
Girl Steals Colt 45, Plans Williamsburg Beauty Pageant
Earlier this year Williamsburg resident Misha Calvert found herself being arrested for stealing two 40-oz Colt 45 bottles at a bodega in the neighborhood. Embarrassing! The 25-year-old took it in stride and somehow successfully pitched her own community service idea to the judge: a Mr. and Miss Williamsburg Pageant. No, really. FreeWilliamsburg reports that it'll all go down at Supreme Trading on September 5th, and there's still time to order your Bedford Avenue scarf, iron your skinny jeans, look up ironic in the dictionary, lose all sense of self, join the flock and enter! Calvert declares "It's not just about looks. Contestants will be judged on personal interview and talent as well. But like most situations we are judging each other, beauty does play a part. Why a pageant? Because they're awesome." Society, consider Calvert's debt paid.
Miss Brooklyn is Back
The Miss Brooklyn Pageant is coming back to town this coming Saturday after a 16-year absence from the scene (and they've returned in the MySpace age). The winner of the night will advance to the Miss New York Pageant, having a shot at becoming Miss America herself.
