Hangdog piano pop star Billy Joel has long done for Long Island what Bruce Springsteen did for New Jersey. His odes to smalltown bartenders and awkward high school reunions in Manhasset, Oyster Bay and Oceanside have made him a living legend on the island. And now the oft-depressed Joel is cementing his status there by combining his love for Strong Island with his abiding passion for motorcycles, opening up his own motorcycle showroom in Oyster Bay.

Driver In Deadly LI Crash Was Speeding, Unlicensed
More details have emerged about the crash on Pine Hollow Road in Oyster Bay that left three people in two cars dead on Sunday. Israel Maldonado (pictured) was speeding in a Nissan Altima, with his cousin Jose Suazo as passenger, when he passed a patrol car, which then followed it. The Daily News reports, "Nassau Detective Lt. Kevin Smith said Maldonado, who was not licensed to drive in New York, was clocked at 76 mph - 21 miles over the speed limit. 'We have witnesses who were between the police officer and the car,' Smith added, 'who said this car was absolutely flying.'"

Late last night, three people died in a two-car crash on Pine Hollow Road in Oyster Bay. According to WCBS 2, some witnesses say that one of the cars was being chased by the police: "Nassau cops confirmed that three were left dead after the crash, but would not confirm a chase did take place."
L.I. Town Makes It Illegal To "Wave While Latino"
In an attempt to punish day laborers and those who employ them, the town of Oyster Bay had implemented a controversial law that immigrant rights activists say makes it illegal to "Wave While Latino." The new legislation imposes fines of $250 on people who solicit employment, which "includes, but is not limited to, shouting at cars, waving arms or signs, making hand signals, approaching motor vehicles or standing in public roads facing in the direction of oncoming traffic," according to the Times.
State Considers Banning Texting While Driving
State Senator Carl Marcellino of Oyster Bay and Assemblyman Felix Ortiz of Brooklyn are co-sponsoring a bill to stop drivers from text messaging while driving. Last month, an SUV driven by a 17-year-old girl crashed into a tractor trailer upstate in Ontario County. The SUV's driver, Bailey Goodman, and the four friends in the car all died on impact (the tractor trailer's driver was uninjured).
Junior Can't Afford The Gotti Life
John Gotti Jr., son of Gambino mob boss John Gotti and long suspected of still being in the mob (even though his last trial ended in a mistrial) tells the Post he's moving out of New York because he's a bit cash-strapped. The Post touts his "don-sizing" of his Oyster Bay mansion - we wonder if any mob lore fans will want to buy Gotti's 1.96 acre home. Gotti Jr. said, "We're going to move out east at first [within Long Island so his son can finish high school], and then, in a year, to Florida or South Carolina, where it's cheaper." Watch out, Dirty South!

Tiffany's Laurelton Hall at the Met
The Met just opened a new exhibit called “Louis Comfort Tiffany and Laurelton Hall: An Artist’s Country Estate” on Tuesday. Many aspects of Tiffany’s home (which took 3 years to build, from 1902 to 1905) are represented. The 84-room, eight-level house was nearly 600 acres overlooking Long Island Sound, was in Oyster Bay, New York. Tiffany himself designed the home inside and out, and this exhibition is a window into his art, through design, furniture and landscape.
