Yesterday, a truck hit a Chinatown business near the Manhattan Bridge—and it was the second time this year wireless store has been hit. The Post reports that a "runaway cement truck" which "apparently lost its [brakes] at about noon on Canal Street near the Manhattan Bridge, careen[ed] out of control along the busy street" and "sideswiped half a dozen cars -- including one filled with children -- and then crashed through the front of a wireless-phone store." (See this picture.) One witness said of the scared children, "They were very distraught. It was traumatic. The truck was bearing down on them. They were both crying." Ten people (no pedestrians) had minor injuries; no criminality was involved.

8-Year-Old Boy Loses Leg When Minivan Plows Into Him
An 8-year-old boy, who had just returned home from school, was standing on a Brooklyn sidewalk with his mother when an out-of-control minivan jumped the curb. The incident occurred when a driver was trying to parallel park on Stratford Road—the driver went into reverse and, according to WCBS 2, "witnesses said the Ford hit another vehicle before going into the building, hitting both the boy and" his mother. The boy, Justin Abuled, was, 1010WINS reports, "apparently slammed through the door of a building and shattered glass severed his leg." And a neighbor told the Post, "His leg was off to the side, he was fidgeting and crying, asking for his mother." Neighbors also packed up the leg on ice and doctors are hoping to reattach it. The Daily News, which says the boy's foot (not leg) was severed, reports that the minivan driver said his brakes failed; no charges have been filed yet.
Garbage Truck Driver Charged with Midtown Deaths
A driver for a private garbage trucking company was charged with manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide. Police say that Auvryn Scarlett lost control of his truck on West 35th Street between 5th and 6th Avenues Tuesday night, fatally hitting a couple and injuring a man; they believe Scarlett had a seizure and note he recently stopped taking his seizure medication.
Out-of-Control Garbage Truck Kills 2, Injures 1 in Midtown
Last night, a private garbage truck jumped a curbed, hitting and killing two pedestrians on West 35th Street near 6th Avenue in Manhattan. The truck driver suffered a heart attack, losing control of the truck. A police source told the News, "He traveled along the sidewalk taking out lampposts, signs, storefront."
