We sure hope nobody in that teeming mass of humanity who went to Bryant Park to watch One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest was drinking booze last night. Though for a hot second it looked like drinking was going to be allowed for movies in the park turns out it was never actually made legit. And it won't be.
No Legal Outdoor Boozing For Bryant Park Movies After All
Drinking At Bryant Park Movies ThisClose To Being Legal!
Bryant Park's Monday night summer movie series doesn't kick off until June 20, but when it does boozehounds will be happy. After years of turning a blind eye to illegal drinking in the park during the popular outdoor screenings, and rumors of a policy change, DNAinfo is reporting that, pending approval from the SLA (which should happen), drinking will be allowed in the park during movies this summer.
New Backyard Bar Drinking Bill Would End Party At Midnight On Weekends
Last year state Assemblywoman Joan Millman, a Democrat from Carroll Gardens, proposed legislation that would have required bars with outdoor drinking areas to move the party inside by 10 p.m. on weeknights and 11 p.m. on weekends. That bill quietly died on the vine, but Millman is back with a revised version that would require bars to close the great outdoors by midnight on weekends and 11 p.m. on weeknights, and also require them to obtain a special outdoor alcohol permit. Who could argue with such a sensible compromise... besides bar owners and irritable drunks who don't appreciate being corralled into a stuffy drinking coffin because The Man needs his beauty sleep?
Bryant Park May Officially Allow Boozing During Movies
One of the great pleasures of New York in the summer, once you get past the smell of hot trash, are the outdoor movie screenings in Bryant Park. And while booze is not technically legal in the park, we (and countless others) have a few tried-and-true tricks to getting sloshed al fresco (waterbottles, anyone?). And anyway, it's never really seemed like that big a deal, at least according to Bloomberg. But this summer you might be allowed to let your drunk flag fly legally!
Where To Drink Outside RIGHT NOW NOW NOW
Stuck inside your office today, staring longingly out the window at the proud drunks parade-goers? Join the club. But there is a light at the end of your stuffy, sober tunnel: A number of bars have opened their outdoor spaces just in time for the beautiful weather today, and with all this new sunlight we're enjoying past 4 p.m. chances are the temperature won't drop until you're already too blitzed to care. Ordinarily we'd advise against going to a bar on St. Patrick's Day, but after the winter we've endured, we're willing to put up with some rowdy revelry for the sake of al fresco imbibing. Here's where it's happening:
Could NYC Designate Outdoor "Booze Zones"?
Public drinking has long been the final frontier for many legal NYers. Marty Markowitz doesn't see why people can't drink on their stoops, and even Mayor Bloomberg has seemed sympathetic to people who want a bottle of Red while watching the Philharmonic in the park. And yet, in this age of magical homeless people, we still aren't allowed to chug our Four Lokos on a park bench in peace! Maybe we can take a page from England: police in Essex are considering creating designated "booze zones" to allow drinkers to get a taste without disturbing the general public.
Studio Square, Mother of All Beer Gardens, Opens in LIC
Of course it's not literally the mother, for several obvious reasons—for one thing, there's the well-established predecessor Bohemian Hall, to the north in Astoria. But at least in terms of size, Studio Square in Long Island City is now king of New York, boasting a colossal 18,000 square feet beer garden that officially opens today at 4 p.m. The full beer and food menu is below.
New Restaurants on the Radar: Campbell Terrace, The Flying Cow, Cure
Campbell Terrace: Summer's here (in spirit) and the time is right to relax outside in mahogany rocking chairs and drink. Campbell Terrace, run by the same folks who operate the clubby Campbell Apartment in Grand Central Terminal, have just re-opened for the season in the Vanderbilt Avenue portico between 42nd and 43rd Streets. Boasting 1,500 square feet of shady, open-air imbibing, the terrace's myriad rocking chairs are a homage to the furniture provided in the ladies' waiting rooms in the early days of Grand Central Terminal. This year Campbell Terrace reopens with a new and expanded spirits menu, featuring vintage cocktails such as the Strawberry Southside (Gin, fresh muddled strawberries and mint topped with Champagne), and signature cocktail The Terrace Punch (Cane rum, orange liqueur, ginger liqueur, mango nectar, fresh lemon juice and a pinch of allspice). The food menu is the same as the inside bar, and includes club sandwiches, quesadillas, and cheese plates. Open Monday through Friday from 2 p.m. until 10 p.m. 15 Vanderbilt Avenue, (212) 980-9476.
