• Devils 5, Hurricanes 1: To be fair, Carolina was without three of its best players, but even a full-strength Hurricanes team would have had trouble with the Devils. New Jersey allowed only 22 shots the entire game and blew by Carolina for its seventh win in nine games. That makes them tied for the Eastern Conference lead with Ottawa and Montreal and two points clear of Pittsburgh in the Atlantic Division. The Senators and the Penguins, however, have a game in hand. Travis Zajac, Mike Mottau, Jay Pandolfo, Johnny Oduya and Zach Parise all took part in the scoring. This was classic shutdown mode for a team peaking at the right time.
• Islanders 3, Sharks 2: If you can't beat the opposing goaltender, why not bloody his face and then get the puck into the net? That more teams haven't tried this method is one of the world's biggest unsolved mysteries. Radek Martinek couldn't get the puck home, but he did do enough damage to Sharks goalie Evgeni Nabokov's mask that the netminder had to get stitches. He probably should have stayed in the dressing room. Andy Hilbert and Mike Comrie helped tie the game in less than a minute, and then Freddy Meyer did the glamorous work to give the Islanders a home win. They're one point out of a playoff spot, but they've played more games than Buffalo, Boston and Philadelphia, the teams above them in the Eastern Conference standings.

Thrashers 4, Devils 3 (SO): John Madden put the Devils up a goal with 8:45 remaining, but with 18 seconds to go, Atlanta's Marian Hossa got the equalizer. The teams went 10 rounds in a shootout before the Thrashers emerged on top. Eighteen seconds away from two points, and instead the Devils settle for one. This was the second straight overtime game for the Devils, who also play Saturday.

Okay, we realize that this isn't quite as crucial to the basics of a kitchen as either a sharp knife or a cast iron pan, but in our minds, it still ranks as a kitchen essential. Why? Because not only do we use our Microplane grater quite frequently, but it does what it is designed to do absolutely flawlessly.

And now it’s the Islanders turn to head out to Western Canada and based on Monday’s 4-0 thrashing, they may have the same problems the Rangers did. Early in the second, Ales Hemsky skated in on two defenders and through a harmless shot towards the net, that Rick DiPietro somehow let in and the rout was on. The Oliers added two more goals in the second and another one in the third to complete the scoring. New York outshot Edmonton 35-33, but Mathieu Garon kept the puck out of the net.

But Dubielewicz doesn't deserve all the blame. Ottawa has plenty of talent and the highest points total in the Eastern Conference. After stonewalling to a scoreless first period, the Senators put up three goals in the middle session to suck the drama out of this one. Bill Guerin scored both Islanders goals, with the second coming in garbage time.

The Lakers cruised to a 70-45 lead and then had to hang on against a Knicks’ rally that happened with the unit of Nate Robinson, David Lee, Malik Rose, Jared Jeffries and Jamal Crawford playing most of the minutes. What changes are coming? It’s hard to say, but a good start would be splitting Eddy Curry and Zach Randolph up. Let’s just hope Isiah doesn’t start making trades.

Rangers 5 Ottawa 2: The Senators may be in a funk of late, but they still have the best record in the Eastern Conference. That may not last for too much longer as the Rangers beat Ottawa soundly Saturday afternoon, scoring three goals in the first period and forcing a goaltending change. Islanders 3 Ottawa 2 (Shootout): The Islanders got a huge victory Wednesday night thanks to some great goaltending from Rick DiPietro. DiPietro made 35 saves during the game and an additional 5 in the shootout to propel New York to victory. The current Devils are one of the best teams in the NHL over the past 12 seasons, but that meant nothing as they opened up their new building with a loss. The Senators blew open a 1-1 game after two with three goals in the third and the Devils fell to 3-6-1 on the season. Luckily, they have a lot of home games coming up at “The Rock”.

The Yankees chipped away late in the game with solo home runs from Cano, A-Rod and Abreu, but they could get no closer and they will once again head into next season in search of their 27th championship. Who will be back and who will be managing in 2008 is hard to say right now, but expect a lot of changes in the Yankees’ organization over the next few weeks.

Our friends from the Great White North are feeling flush from the strengthening of the Canadian dollar versus its US counterpart, and New York is apparently ready to relieve them of their excess cash. The Loonie, or Canadian dollar, is even with the US dollar for the first time since 1976. If you've ever wondered why the backs of paperback books usually have a second, more expensive, price printed on them them for Canadians, it's not because we don't want our northern neighbors to read inexpensively. It's because the Canadian dollar has traditionally been weaker than the US dollar and the exchange rate necessitated dual pricing in North America.

After spending a week healing their wounds, the Rangers head into the second round of the playoffs tonight rested and ready. They will need to be at the top of their game to beat the Buffalo Sabres, a deep and talented team with plenty of guys who can fly all over the ice.

The win leaves the Rangers in the seventh spot with four games left. Their margin for error remains razor-thin with two points separating them from the ninth-place team, Toronto, who visit MSG tonight.

Carolina’s loss leaves them with 78 points, tied with the Islanders and two ahead of the Rangers in the very tight Eastern Conference. The Devils moved to within two of Buffalo for the conference lead.

-Knicks 100, Heat 76: Eddy Curry's 5-for-5 shooting in the third quarter helped the Knicks outscore the Heat, 34-14, in the period and helped New York roll to its second straight win. It's the Knicks' first winning streak of the season, though Friday's win came over a decimated Heat team. The Knicks have won the two games by a combined 44 points, and they've called on a wide range of contributors. Jamal Crawford, who scored 19, called it "the most balanced victory so far." They've had four through their first 10 games.

You cannot write the story of the 2005-06 Rangers without recognizing how far they exceeded expectations. Picked by many to finish dead last, the Rangers surprised everyone by making the playoffs and, more importantly, making the franchise relevant again. As great as that was, you also cannot ignore the collapse the team suffered in the final two weeks of the season.

The Rangers are slumping at just the wrong time. Facing one of the worst teams in the league, New York gave up 35 shots while only managing 24 of their own and lost 5-3 to Pittsburgh. The loss coupled with a Devils win over Philadelphia leaves the Rangers with a 3 point lead in the division over both teams.

The Rangers paid the price for taking the Islanders lightly Tuesday. After falling behind 3-0, the Rangers played a furious third period, launching 24 shots, but ultimately falling short in their 3-2 defeat. The loss and a Philadelphia win shrinks the Rangers’ division lead to three points.

It has been nine long years since the Rangers last made the playoffs, but the drought is finally over thanks to a 3-2 victory over Philadelphia Wednesday night. The win gave New York 96 points a number which 9th place Atlanta will not be able to reach.

You can’t really blame the Rangers for being tired. Playing their 7th game in 11 nights, the Rangers came out flat, took several bad penalties and fell to the Senators 4-1. The loss leaves the Rangers with a four-point lead over Philadelphia, but the Flyers have two games in hand.

If not for Martin Straka’s skate, Jaromir Jagr would hold the record for most goals in a season by a Ranger. Jagr appeared to have scored his 53rd goal of the year in the second period, but replays showed that it actually went off of Straka and instead of a goal, Jagr was credited with his fourth assist while Straka got a natural hat trick in the Rangers’ 5-1 win. While Jagr didn’t get the goal record, he did set the franchise points record, breaking Jean Ratelle’s mark of 109.

The Rangers continued their slide Saturday night, dropping a 1-0 contest to the Canadians. Craig Rivet scored on the power play towards the end of the first period and Cristobal Huet made it stand up with 26 saves. The loss is the fourth in a row for New York and while Carolina and Ottawa pull away, they remain in first place by one point over the Flyers.

The Rangers served notice last night that they are ready to take on the best teams in the NHL. New York totally controlled their game with league-power Ottawa, beating them 5-1. The win keeps the Rangers in first place and brings them within three points of the Senators for second place in the conference.

The Rangers have hit their first rough patch of the season. After coming home from a successful road trip, they dropped one-goal games to Vancouver and Colorado before losing to New Jersey 3-1 last night. The loss leaves the Rangers with a one point lead over second place Philadelphia.
