A look at some noteworthy television this week:

MOVIE: The 2006 Clark Kent hit the big screen in Superman Returns. Tonight catch the superhero do his thing all over again at the River Flicks outdoor film series. Free popcorn, free film and a nice cold summer breeze. Bring a blanket!

DANCE: A little while ago we told you about Matthew Bourne's adaptation of Tim Burton’s cult classic Edward Scissorhands into a dance performance. Scissors...dancing...sure, why not? The show opens tonight, and from what we've seen on the commercials that have been running - seems to capture the essence of the movie.

Nothing distracts from this sub-freezing weather like a good flick. Here's a few options out this weekend in New York Theaters. Ryan Phillippe works hard to figure out Chris Cooper's espionage secrets in the new thriller the super human, flammable commuter.

Too many times, we’ve suffered through a poorly directed film (or Brittany Murphy movie) and admitted the only aspect which kept us from banging our head up against the overpriced tub of popcorn was the trailer lineup. Sad, but for many of us, often the trailers are the best part of the money-sucking movie experience. Bam Cinematek understands our appreciation (as well as our ADD) and tonight at 7:00 PM, the theatre will present an entire evening of trailers, including campy hits (Bit Top Pee Wee), hilarious horror (Twisted Nerve), classics (The Shining), and even Orson Welles’ F for Fake. Thereafter, the audience gets to vote on their favorite trailer and the winning film will screen in December. And yes, we strongly suggest voting for The Shining. It’s that time of the year again – that special time you brave New York’s notoriously humid and sticky summer to battle for one more blanket inch on a crowded park lawn. This year’s free outdoor movie festivals – RiverFlicks, Riverside Park Movies Under the Stars, Brooklyn Music & Movies Series, and HBO Bryant Park Summer Film Festival–offer a wide range of musicals and old favorites, from The Sound of Music to The Big Lebowski (see below for June/July schedule). Also be sure to check out the Rooftop Films series, showcasing short, low-budget and underground films every Friday at Automotive High School in Williamsburg and every Saturday at Old American Can Factory in Brooklyn at 9:00 PM; $8.

The Sweet Smell of Success plays Friday and Saturday at the Film Forum at 1:35, 5:25, 9:15. Read Andrew Sarris's review of The Sweet Smell of Success; it's also a Great Movie according to Roger Ebert.

The Times' Elvis Mitchell calls The Third Man, "quite simply, one of the finest movies ever made and Roger Ebert says it most completely embodies the romance of going to the movies with its existential loss and weariness knowingness.
