Times Square Olive Garden, get ready: Grand Forks food critic and internet meme Marilyn Hagerty is coming your way. No, really. She'll be stopping by with Anderson Cooper after a whirlwind media blitz in town that will include a trip to Le Bernardin. And yes, the whole thing will be blogged (though not by Marilyn herself). Meanwhile, the media's Marilyn mania is metastasizing. A lunch with Michelle Obama is reportedly being worked on by North Dakota Senator Kent Conrad!

Your Guide To The Best Old-School Halloween Candies
Halloween is almost upon us, and that means one thing: CANDY. But not all that newfangled nonsense with the 3-D chocolate and edible glitter and biologically engineered flavor bursts. We're talking about classic candy—the kind of stuff that's been around since your grandparents were trick-or-treating. The kind of stuff that you can't find in too many places these days, unless you take a trip down to Economy Candy, the city's preeminent old-school candy purveyor, a sugar-fueled time warp if there ever was one. Here's a look at some of the fine products we were able to score on a recent shopping trip.

Mamma mia! Little Italy shopkeepers are feeling the burn of Mario Batali, whose ginormous Flatiron Italian food emporium Eataly is stealing all their customers away.
NYC's Finest Old-School Bowling Alleys
Not crazy about the younger breed of newfangled bowling alleys cropping up across the city—places with blaring DJs, exorbitant drink prices, and some BS lounge-y atmosphere? If you prefer the smell of stale beer and tacky furnishings to compliment your game, click through for a journey to some of New York City's classic old school alleys; while they're a dying breed, they do exist, if you know where to look.

THEATER: Dance-theatre maverick Pina Bausch returns to the Brooklyn Academy of Music with Nefés, which is described as an ode to Istanbul, 'the city of water'. Originally conceived in 2002, Nefés (Turkish for "breath") “quickly became a life-affirming response to Istanbul's bouts with political upheaval. But rather than echoing the violence, Bausch invests her signature humor and emotional pathos with an acute sense of calm. Set to an eclectic score featuring Turkish songs, tangos from Astor Piazzolla, and classical guitar, Nefés also features massive video screens with which the performers interact.” - John Del Signore
The Cinecultist's Weekly Movie Picks: All Saints edition
Of course the big news in New York movies this weekend is the New York Film Festival which kicks off tomorrow at Lincoln Center. However, in an attempt reserve our NYFF excitement for a full post tomorrow, let's just focus on the regular releases. Here we go.

EVENT: NYC Photobloggers will take over the Apple Store again tonight, for the 7th of their events there. The A-list...um, list, of past photographers is a long one. Six more will join the ranks tonight, as they are the centerpieces for this event. They are:
Stay Classy, Will Ferrell
As seen in the video, part of Ferrell's appeal is, as David Edelstein writes in Slate, the fact that he's "not afraid to take a joke to the next level." It's his fearlessness in being silly and goofy - it's totally focused, but still approachable (not scary and manic the way Robin Williams is). A.O. Scott describes the recent Ferrell oeuvre thusly, "'Anchorman,' by indulging Mr. Ferrell's gift for inventive lunacy, is more amusing than annoying. It is not as maniacally uninhibited as 'Old School' or as dementedly lovable as 'Elf,' but its cheerful dumbness is hard to resist." Lunacy, maniacal, demented - that's Ferrell. And the Village Voice (via Chicagoist) language of Ferrell in Anchorman.
Pizza Road (Well, Subway) Trip Alert
And, finally, in more ridiculous food news, Macy's is going to test-market Cosi sandwich shops in their department stores, so people can eat within the confines of Macy's - without sneaking to the food court. Cosi is pretty good, but Gothamist will never be able to have another sandwich made out of Cosi's signature Pizza Romano flat bread again - we were forcefed Cosi sandwiches by an early employer who didn't want us to leave the office during lunch.
Elf Opens Today!
Today, the eagerly-anticipated film Will-Ferrell-as-elf film, Elf, opens. Gothamist enjoyed this sweet and funny film (maybe sweeter than we'd anticipated, but still, some choice hilarious moments - go to the movie website, go to "Inner Elf" for "Elf videos" and watch any or all of the clips). We look forward to watching it on afternoons when we're blue and being cheered up by a Will Ferrell triple bill of Dick, Old School, and Elf.
The Secret Life of Mayor Bloomberg
Mayor Bloomberg liked Old School? We knew there was a reason Gothamist had a soft spot in our hearts for our tiny, billionaire mayor, in spite of some silly decisions and awkward public demeanor. The Post looks at the Mayor's private schedule which reveals various appointments and plans. For instance, he spent an hour with Anna Wintour when Vogue was profiling his girlfriend, Diana Taylor, and he scheduled a re-shoot of photographs with city employees when the first set turned out fuzzy which Gothamist doesn't think is an especially revealing notice, but whatever. Anyway, back to blissfully silly Old School: His press secretary tells the Post, Bloomberg "really liked it," and the psychologist the Post called upon to analyze the Mayor's behavior posits, "Perhaps there's a bit of reminiscing about his younger days?"
The Dan Band
Seeing Old School on Sunday, I was thrilled to see The Dan Band performing at the wedding. Who is The Dan Band? Headed by Dan Finnerty, the men cover mainly girl songs like Alanis Morrisette's "You Oughta Know," TLC's "No Scrubs," and Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive." It's hilarious, and if you've seen Old School, you know how funny Dan Finnerty et al. are.
