Yesterday CMJ began to take over the city. Reports of long lines at the badge pickup station came in quickly, but if this week is about anything it's about long lines. Oh, and music. 2007 is just around the corner, and we've got a little tip sheet on where to be when the clock strikes midnight.

Apes and Androids are a new band. In fact, they only have a few shows under their belts so far as we can tell. However, we have rarely seen someone come out of nowhere and gather so much attention in such a quick time. They've already earned a coveted Oh My Rockness recommendation star for both of their upcoming shows. As the name suggests, they blend a precise electronic sound with pure animal emotion. Rather than rattle off a decade and genre spanning list of bands they seem to be influenced by, we'd recommend simply heading over to their myspace and listening for yourself. It is like nothing else coming out of this scene right now.

Last year Gothamist headed down to Austin for SXSW to help launch Austinist amongst other things. This year we're headed back down to throw our own Austinist + Gothamist day party. We'll have a pretty flyer and more details to post on that soon, but for now we're going to tell you about the afterparty...

We were really knocked out by Mazarin at Pianos last week. Very fun band. One can only hope that this week holds such surprise awesomeness. Some potential candidates:

Gothamist doesn't really like New Years Eve, it's overhyped and too expensive. So short of suggesting you just stay at home here's a little list of things you could do to ring in '05.
