After hearing gunshots, an off-duty NYPD officer tried to chase down a group of men involved in the East Harlem shooting—leading to another barrage of bullets that left one man injured. When the cop started trailing a group of men reportedly involved in a shooting near Lexington Avenue and 103rd Street last night at around 10 p.m., there was a second exchange of gunfire and a man was hit in the leg, the Daily News reports. Details on Stabbing of Off-Duty Cop in Chelsea

The Post and Daily News have more information about yesterday morning's stabbing of an off-duty police officer who had been walking in Chelsea with his girlfriend and some other women. Apparently the women were harassed by a group of men, prompted Officer Jonathan Silvetti to say, "Hey, that's my girl. They're with me." When Silvetti said he was a cop and showed them his NYPD shield, one said, "So what? I got one of those," and began to punch Silvetti. Then another in the group stabbed him in the hip. Silvetti was treated at St. Vincent's Hospital and a suspect, Steven Goddard, was charged with assault. more ›

Bloomberg Supports "Drunk" Off-Duty Cop's Defensive Shooting

Mayor Bloomberg said today he thought the off-duty police detective--whose blood alcohol was 0.10, above the 0.08 limit--who fired back at a suspect "acted correctly." The Post reports the mayor gave his comments during a press conference on a different topic. He was asked about the shooting and said, "I clearly think the officer did the right thing. Having said that, it is up to [Police Commissioner Ray Kelly]. He will do a thorough investigation and then make a decision." Bloomberg pointed out the officer, in trying to stop attackers from beating someone and was fired upon, "saw something where people's lives were threatened and he took appropriate action to stop that." more ›
