We all knew the real estate bubble was causing insanity, but we should have known it's encouraged people to divorce. There's a NY Times Styles section article about some who wait until the market's at its peak to divorce - that way, they can benefit from an even bigger profit when selling their homes.

“The Secret” and its, dare we say, disciples, if you imagine it will come. Oprah did her own show on the topic, exclaiming, “I've been talking about this for so many years on my show, I just never called it The Secret!” And if Oprah's been talking about it, then you know it's gospel.
To accompany an Oscar-themed story about celebrities' publicists working to make sure their clients don't run into exes, there's a NY Times Styles section about real people's strategies not to run into exes. Certainly the prospect of running into an ex can make the heart race and forehead sweat, but it can happen, especially if you date people in your neighborhood. One broken-up couple decided to literally divide Manhattan at Fifth Avenue. Christian Shraga explained, “We couldn’t cross Fifth Avenue above 14th Street during the day, nor could we cross Fifth Avenue below 14th Street at night.”
There is an awesome NY Times Styles article about lawyers who represent pets... or, more technically, the people who love them. With issues like "dog bites, custody battles, pet trusts and veterinary malpractice" entering into the legal world, many law schools - including Harvard and Columbia - offer classes in animal law. Which does raise some concern over excessive lawsuits, but here in the city, animal law can be a part of something very critical - the right to live in your apartment.
Limitations on the value of pets discourage many from suing for veterinary malpractice, pet lawyers say. But those facing eviction from rent-stabilized apartments because of their pets are more willing to spend money on a pet lawyer, said Darryl M. Vernon, a partner in the Manhattan law firm of Vernon & Ginsburg, who specializes in housing cases stemming from pet ownership.Continue reading "Cutest Legal Subculture: Lawyers for Pets!"

Finally-- a post that should offend just about everyone! This week's cover story in New York Magazine tackles one of the most pressing questions of our day: are Jews smarter than everyone else, and if so, by how much?. The original title of the article was "One more reason to hate the Jews", but apparently the far blander "Are Jews Smarter?" won out. The article goes on to make a fairly dispassionate argument-- presenting and then debunking some recent scientific studies that connect Ashkenazi genes to higher intelligence. An excerpt:
Gothamist became very relieved this weekend after a pair of articles touting that places other than our dear city would have various NYC charms. Because there's no nightmare we'd like better during a drunken bender than to be dropped into either Philly (which is supposedly masquerading as Brooklyn) or Las Vegas (which has a development called East Village, but includes the Washington Square Arch and a diamond district - for those high rollers, one can only assume), only to wake up in a strange new world that seems like New York but isn't New York. It would be a great high-concept movie (think Judgement Night) and a very terrible real life - where are our sweaty subways? Where are the rats picking through garbage? Where are the $20 cocktails? Where are the tourists with fannypacks? All told, we rather be lost in The Brick Apple or Lego's NYC Miniland (hope they revise the Freedom Tower design!).
Curbed on Chelsea and the Meatpacking District and more on the gentrification of West Chelsea, just north of the Meatpacking District, or how an airlines' "cool" lower-cost business wanted to sponsor the Meatpacking District.
