Off-Duty Corrections Officer Fatally Shot In Brooklyn

Early Sunday morning, an off-duty state correction officer was killed after being shot multiple times on Nostrand Avenue in Crown Heights. The NY Times reports that the victim, Jeremie Kane, had "left Millie’s Head 2 Toes barbershop... just before 1 a.m., the police said. Mr. Kane stepped outside the barbershop to make a call on his cellphone when he got into a dispute with another man, who then shot him." According to the Daily News, Kane was shot twice in the head and four times in the chest—"Investigators were not certain what prompted the deadly shooting and have not ruled out that it was a robbery attempt." Kane, 30, was assigned to Ossining "Sing Sing" Prison, but was released on workers comp leave last month and had been staying with his mother in Brooklyn. The Times saw his aunt visit the site where Kane was killed and a small memorial had been placed; she sobbed, "Oh, my God, the blood’s still here."

David’s Brisket House is an unlikely relic on a stretch of Nostrand Avenue mostly populated by 99 cent stores and West Indian delis. The space is narrow and dated, outfitted with mirrored walls (the sort mostly reserved for adult film sets) and ceiling tiles brown with the remnants of some ancient leak. It doesn’t have the fame of Carnegie Deli or the sprawling space and hypnotic neon glow of Katz’s. The clueless tourists and first-timers, the ones who order their pastrami with mayo (tsk) and request half sour pickles (tsk tsk), don’t come here. David’s is a place for locals and sandwich hedonists—the type who don’t mind the occasional visit from a neighborhood crazy if it means dining with the kind of mindless abandon the place requires.

It turns out the victims of a weekend hit-and-run are mother and daughter. Fifty-five year old Jane Felzin was killed when a red Kia hit her as she crossed Nostrand Avenue in Brooklyn; her daughter Emily, 25, is in critical condition at Kings County Hospital. The accident occured before midnight on Saturday, and the Felzins were walking home after parking their car nearby. A neigbhor said, "I heard screeching and then a bang. It sounded like two cars hitting. [Jane Felzin] was thrown about 50 feet." Another said the car had been going 80 mph, and skids marks are still visible on the street.

If you can’t deal with a bun that is soaked through, don’t go to Brennan and Carr. If you think meat that is steamed until it turns grey is gross, don’t go to Brennan and Carr. But if you want a classic Brooklyn roast beef sandwich, this is your place.

New York City boasts 578 miles of coastline. But nowhere exudes that relaxed island vibe like Culpepper’s in the landlocked neighborhood of Crown Heights, Brooklyn. With a Haitian joint just half a block away and an abundance of West Indian restaurants peppering the area, the Barbadian Culpepper’s could have been lost in the Caribbean crowd.

- 4:42AM: Three people "stabbed or slashed" at East 45th and GlenwoodResidents admitted that while crime was down overall, it's still depressing that some people continue the violence. One woman told the NY Times, "Sometimes it's just stupidity, simple arguments. Sometimes it's with their own friends," while another man said, "Why, when a young person leaves the house for a party, why do they pack a gun?" All victims are in stable condition and are expected to survive.

-Hylan Boulevard Looking at the MTA's site, it's pretty cool that the MTA is taking other bus systems around the world into consideration - and we love any plan that wants better bus boarding!

A girl crossing Nostrand Avenue was pinned down by a "runaway" school bus in Brooklyn yesterday afternoon. Second grader Amber Sadiq had been walking home with her 10 year old brother when an empty bus rolled down the street. The bus weighed 26,000 pounds, and witnesses tried to push the bus off Sadiq without luck. When police arrived, they asked a nearby Con Ed truck to help pull the bus off Sadiq. Sadiq's brother, Umar, who was able to dodge the bus, cried, "I was right there with her. It was terrible. Someone picked me up and carried me home." One witness said Sadiq tried to run "but the garbage can was in the way."

This must a be a new one: A drug dealer kidnapped beacuse her clients "wanted to teach her a lesson" was rescued by the police tracing her cell phone. Apparently Erica Rodriguez's drugs weren't good enough for three men who ended up kidnapping her from her Hamilton Heights home to East Flatbush. Two of the men got away, but the one that was arrested allegedly has a criminal justice degree (his landlord, who works for the Department of Correction, calls it "ironic"). No word on whether Rodriguez will be charged for selling drugs.

This makes Gothamist wonder what kind of other crap is on the subway tracks. Actually, we don't even want to know. And where is the rest of the body? On the 2/3? Riding the shuttle between Times Square and Grand Central? If you see another bag with body parts, it might be wise to call the po po.

Some stories Gothamist has been following lately [additionally, based on a totally unofficial survey of a couple newspapers, it seems about 50% - or more - of the stories are about the convention...we suppose NYC will have to get more interesting post-convention]:
