After Man Gets Shot On Brooklyn Street, Video Shows "Nobody Tried To Help Him"

Last Saturday at 7:30 p.m., a 24-year-old man was fatally shot on Nostrand Avenue near Glenwood. A graphic surveillance video showing Trevonne Winn talking on his cellphone and then getting shot by a man was released, in hopes that more information about the suspect can be found. According to the Post, Winn's mother was extremely upset by the video, because others on the street appear to simply be standing there and watching Winn twitch from his injuries, "What kind of city is this? No one helped my child. Someone could have helped him and turned him over on his side to help him breathe... I saw that video. When I saw the video, I walked out of the room. That will be forever engraved in my memory. I saw my child fall on the floor, and nobody tried to help him." more ›

Crown Heights Stores Raided for Selling Weed Under the Table

Crown Heights Stores Raided for Selling Weed Under the Table

About a half-dozen businesses along Nostrand Avenue in Crown Heights were raided by the NYPD on Tuesday, on charges that owners sold hundreds of pounds of marijuana alongside Caribbean food, incense, clothes, and CDs. The sting snagged the owners of two restaurants, a deli, a bodega, a clothing shop and a music store. "You could go in and get drugs in the food itself or go to the back of the store and pick it up or even buy it over the counter," explained NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly at a press conference in Crown Heights yesterday. "At lunch it turned into a veritable pot-luck event." Gee, one might even say these businesses will now see their profits go up in smoke. more ›

Cops raided at least six stores on Nostrand Avenue in Brooklyn this afternoon, arresting eight and seizing a firearm and two pounds of marijuana. For two months the "open drug bazaar," between Atlantic Avenue and Eastern Parkway in Crown Heights has been under investigation, during which time undercovers purchased pot and cocaine more than fifty times. (According to NBC, a pound of weed went for $1,100.) Beauty and the Brisket

Beauty and the Brisket

David’s Brisket House is an unlikely relic on a stretch of Nostrand Avenue mostly populated by 99 cent stores and West Indian delis. The space is narrow and dated, outfitted with mirrored walls (the sort mostly reserved for adult film sets) and ceiling tiles brown with the remnants of some ancient leak. It doesn’t have the fame of Carnegie Deli or the sprawling space and hypnotic neon glow of Katz’s. The clueless tourists and first-timers, the ones who order their pastrami with mayo (tsk) and request half sour pickles (tsk tsk), don’t come here. David’s is a place for locals and sandwich hedonists—the type who don’t mind the occasional visit from a neighborhood crazy if it means dining with the kind of mindless abandon the place requires. more ›

The Hungry Cabbie Eats The Outer Boroughs: Culpepper's

New York City boasts 578 miles of coastline. But nowhere exudes that relaxed island vibe like Culpepper’s in the landlocked neighborhood of Crown Heights, Brooklyn. With a Haitian joint just half a block away and an abundance of West Indian restaurants peppering the area, the Barbadian Culpepper’s could have been lost in the Caribbean crowd. more ›

Runaway School Bus Kills 8 Year Old Girl

Second grader Amber Sadiq had been walking home with her 10 year old brother when an empty bus rolled down the street. The bus weighed 26,000 pounds, and witnesses tried to push the bus off Sadiq without luck. When police arrived, they asked a nearby Con Ed truck to help pull the bus off Sadiq. One witness said Sadiq tried to run "but the garbage can was in the way." more ›

Cell Phone Saves Kidnapped Drug Dealer

Cell Phone Saves Kidnapped Drug Dealer

This must a be a new one: A drug dealer kidnapped beacuse her clients "wanted to teach her a lesson" was rescued by the police tracing her cell phone. Apparently Erica Rodriguez's drugs weren't good enough for three men who ended up kidnapping her from her Hamilton Heights home to East Flatbush. Two of the men got away, but the one that was arrested allegedly has a criminal justice degree (his landlord, who works for the Department of Correction, calls it "ironic"). No word on whether Rodriguez will be charged for selling drugs. more ›
