A Rockaway resident claims that no-parking signs that bar visitors from leaving their cars in the beach-front neighborhoods of Belle Harbor and Neponsit during summer weekends and holidays are "racist and illegal." The signs force beach-goers to drive west to pay parking lots in Jacob Riis Park, or east to look for street parking in areas that "have a higher percentage of lower-income and minority residents," according to the Times. But according to Uncivil Servants, a website that documents illegally parked cars displaying city permits, employees of Park East, an Upper East Side synagogue, have been using bogus DIY parking placards for years. A man jumped to his death from the 15th floor of 1133 Park Avenue yesterday afternoon. The man was impaled on a "No Parking" sign on the street, and by the time emergency services arrived, "the body had slid down the pole and was draped over a bicycle leaning against the pole," according to the Post. more ›

Remember yesterday's story about the DUMBO man whose car was ticketed and towed on a street where a "No Parking" sign magically appeared? And the Department of Transportation said that parking was allowed on that stretch of Front Street, so they would help David Bourgeois get his ticket dismissed? Well, now the DOT tells the Daily News that the agency DID put up the sign and therefore, Bourgeois will have to pay the ticket and tow fee - a total of $265! Apparently Front Street between Washington and Main Street used to have a "No Parking" sign, but it disappaered a few months ago. And it seems like NYC drivers, being NYC drivers, took advantage of this and parked to their heart's content. Then the sign came back, and boom - the law stepped in. more ›
