open-sign.jpgBack Forty: Peter Hoffman of Savoy brings his fresh-from-the-farm mentality to the East Village, complete with farm implements decorating the walls. The term "Back Forty" referred to the undeveloped quarter of a 160-acre homestead where farm families went to relax and unwind. The menu may be small, but includes a grass-fed beef burger, Maine shrimp and bacon beignets, and a whole grilled Catskill trout. Wash it down with a house cocktail, or if you've got a sweet tooth, a root beer float. 190 Avenue B, near 12th Street, 212-388-1990.

Last Monday was one of those sweltering August days, which is why Gothamist was quite glad to kick off the evening at Kyotofu with the house cocktail, a refreshing combination of sesame shochu and raspberry. Refreshing as the cocktails were, we must admit that's not what drew us to Kyotofu that night. We were there to drink (and talk) sake.

It's burger time! This weekend is the second annual Gothamist-Serious Eats/A Hamburger Today QBQ BBQ at Water Taxi Beach. Your votes determined the burgers on the menu: the onion burger, the butter burger (pictured), and the pimento cheese burger. Six Apart will be sponsoring the event with a keg of Orlio and Gothamist/Serious Eats/A Hamburger Today will also be supplying an additional keg of beer. Tickets, which get you three burgers, are $13.50 and are available online. Don't forget to bring ID -- they're serious. There will be a tent covering seating areas for the event, which is rain or shine.

Two weeks ago, Fauzto Lopez was on his way to his second job at the Ninth Avenue Saloon in Hell's Kitchen when two men, mistaking him for a man they earlier had an argument with, jumped him and then fatally shot him. Today, the Ninth Avenue Saloon will hold a fundraiser for his wife and four children, partly to send his body back to Mexico and partly to support the children.

Whether you're ready or not, the holidays are fast approaching. Thanksgiving is just around the corner with Christmas/Hanukkah/Kwanzaa just a hop, skip and a jump behind. For many of us that brings happy thoughts of turkey, bourbon and pie but for others, it brings anxiety about all those gifts we have to buy. Now, save the “It’s not about the gift, but rather being with the people you love” speech. Whether we like it or not, if we don’t give the super who took three weeks to fix our garbage disposal a present, we better forget about getting that clogged drain snaked. So, we are going to tighten our belts (at least until the pie comes, then nothing but elastic) and spend the next two months dining BYOB (bring your own bottle).

- The Place restaurant is engaged in a dispute with their landlords, Edith Rappy and Taube Management, who have decided not to renew The Place’s lease without any explanation. The community is rallying behind owner Alexander Achilleos and his restaurant at www.savetheplace.com; we encourage you to sign the petition if you'd like to help out this local favorite, which gives 10% of its proceeds to charity. The Place at W.10th Street is not impacted by this dispute and remains open.

Gothamist attended a press dinner at Xing last night where we got to soak in the sleek atmosphere and Chef Lulzim Rexhepi's high-end contemporary Chinese menu. We were seated next to the giant fishtank that links together the minimalist front bar and dining area to the lush red velvet back room, so we were transfixed by the brightly colored beauties as we enjoyed a sampling of their dishes, including Szechuan pepper crusted scallps with a miso butter broth, roasted wild mushrooms and pea shoots ($9); oysters with a sweet Swatow vinegar mignionette, and crispy garlic ($12); and sweet Chinese BBQ spareribs, jazzed up with a sprinkle of sesame seed and a nose-clearing dose of spicy-hot Chinese mustard ($9).

In a time before Pastis transformed the Gansevoort Market forever, Gothamist lived in shared commercial space on Little West 12th Street with some artistically inclined folks. The food routine was straightforward; La Taza de Oro and Hector’s (44 Little West 12th Street, 212-206-7592) for day to day prepared food, Chelsea Market and Western Beef to buy raw foodstuffs, and Rio Mar served endless tapas with your Sangria.

And the drinks are on them! We can't think of a better way to celebrate, really. Time Out New York and the IN:NYC Card will treat patrons to a complimentary cocktail during dinner service at nine select IN:NYC restaurants: Calle Ocho (212-873-5025; 446 Columbus Ave between 81st & 82nd Sts), 6-11pm; Django (212-871-6600; 480 Lexington Ave @ 46th St), 5:30-10:30pm; Kitchen 22 (212-228-4399; 36 E 22nd St between Broadway & Park Ave S), 5-10:30pm; Kitchen 82 (212-875-1619; 461 Columbus Ave @ 82nd St), 5-10:30pm; Ono (212-660-6766;18 Ninth Ave at Gansevoort St), 5-11pm; 66 (212- 925-0202; 241 Church St @ Leonard St), 5:30-11pm; SushiSamba 7 (212-691-7885; 87 Seventh Ave S between Grove & Barrow Sts), 5:30-11pm; Underbar (212-358-1560; 201 Park Ave S @ 17th St), 6-8pm; and Brasserio: Caviar & Banana (212-353-0500; 12 E 22nd St), 5-10pm.

What Pop Burger did for burgers, the new Pizza Bar wants to do for pizza--provide a lounge-y, highly stylized environment in which late night dining and (more importantly?) drinking can occur. By choosing the terrifyingly trendy meatpacking district, the owners (one of whom also owns Pop Burger) have made their mission clear: prey on the young, hungry, and drunken masses. With a full liquor license and operating hours that extend until 4am, Pizza Bar's definitely not your typical by-the-slice pizzeria.

Gothamist on the Times' look at cupcakes. And NY magazine readers chose Magnolisa as their favorite cupcakes, with Amy Sedaris's cupcakes at Joe in second.
