Just shy of a month old, the new Alphabet City branch of West Village Gothamist favorite, Westville, keeps farm fresh veggies flowing to hip, young clientele seven days a week. Seating forty, Westville East offers the same American comfort food as the original joint, but with twice the space to dine and serve in. Of course, this doesn't mean the lines are shorter--during brunch on a recent Sunday the line ran longer than twenty minutes, and during dinner, seats were filled just after the clock hit seven.

The New York Sun has made a resolution to eat more steak. Not just any steak, mind you, but steak from "progressive beef," raised in a way that's healthier for you and for the environment. As we learned from reading The Omnivore's Dilemma, cows are not supposed to eat corn; they are ruminants, and as such, should be eating grass. Due to a glut of corn and government subsidies, we have taught our cows to eat corn, which is not particularly good for them, health-wise. Grass-fed beef is the purest of the "progressive beef" out there, but it's not always so easy to find.

7 Square, which bills itself as "a modern chophouse," may just breathe some new life (or at least some good food) into Times Square. Alvaro Perez, the president of Metromet, a restaurant production company based in Tokyo, is taking his first stab at the New York market. Gothamist got a sneak peek the night before it opened to the public, and we liked what we saw -- a sleek and modern yet warm and comfortable atmosphere, designed with care by Glen Coben, the man behind Del Posto and Sacha. Even more importantly, we liked what we tasted for the most part.

Rain or shine, there will be cold beer, live music, and Niman Ranch pork and chicken slow-cooked by the Waterfront Alehouse's own Sam Barbieri, Steve Harkavy, Bon Soir Caterers' Jeff Reilly, and Rob Richter of Big Island Barbeque. Proceeds from this year's event go to the Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy. Beer and Food are included with admission. Advance tickets $75. At the door $85. 1PM-6PM at the Tobacco Warehouse in Brooklyn Bridge Park (corner of Water and Dock Sts., DUMBO).

August 5: Taco Chulo Opens

Today: Danny Meyer's Shake Shack re-opens. People are all in a tizzy about this place. We have to admit, we like the burgers at the Burger Joint more, but we haven't tried the famed dogs and custard yet. It's only open from 11-4 through April, but extended hours start May 1st. Madison Square Park, Southeast Corner.
