Last Night's Action: Two More Big Points

The Rangers moved into sixth place with a 2-1 win over Minnesota Tuesday night. Nikolai Zherdev had a goal and an assist while the New York defense kept Minnesota under wraps, allowing only 19 shots. Henrik Lundqvist stopped all but one of them, looking very strong in net. The Rangers now have a day off before facing Atlanta on Thursday.

  • Devils 2, Islanders 1: Patrik Elias and Zach Parise each scored, but Martin Brodeur's save on a penalty shot was the big story as New Jersey won this opener for both clubs. Scott Gordon's NHL coaching debut was ruined. Doug Weight scored the only Islanders goal. Both teams are in action again Saturday night.
  • The NHL season starts a little earlier than usual for our local teams. The Rangers are opening their season in Prague this weekend with two sold-out games against the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Islanders and Devils open up against each other next week. For all three teams, the expectations are very different.
