slow news day yesterday, or the Times gave a very generous gift to Six Editor Richard Johnson on his wedding day today, devoting more than a fifth of its front page to the story, including a super classy photo of Johnson with Sharon Stone (Who doesn't like free publicity, right?). Not to mention the Gray Lady's brief history of the the gossip sheet and its lingo ("the labels it pins on the people it covers can be zingers, as the actor Alec Baldwin and the actress Cheryl Tiegs learned when Page Six dubbed him a 'bloviator' and her a 'superannuated supermodel.'") and a look at Ron Burkle the California billionaire who opened this Pandora's box.

According to the paper of record, USA Today, viewers of ABC "comedies" will suffer stupid Oscars-related plots to get people excited about the Oscars; the producers of the Oscars telecast think, for this year, the war is out and frivolity is in; and Bruce Vilanch will be writing a lot of crap for presenters to read off the Tele-Prompter. Can't wait!
Hell, no, Howell won't go: Times Executives Feel Blair's Burn
The New York TImes Executive Editor Howell Raines and Managing Editor Gerald Boyd answered employee questions at a town hall meeting yesterday, and said he won't quit. The Times' own media reporter, Jacques Steinberg, wasn't allowed to report on it, but we're sure that any Times employee bulletin board is the hot place to go - tips? Newsday says it's tough times for Raines.
