Making The Call: A Swing And A Miss So Far

Making The Call: A Swing And A Miss So Far

The Yankees are sitting just a half game out of first place this morning with a sparkling 21-8 record. They are winning games convincingly, but they are also winning them without any significant contributions from their offseason acquisitions. Flash back to the start of 2009. The Yankees brought in three big pieces, CC Sabathia, AJ Burnett and Mark Teixeira. more ›

Last Night's Action: Opening Day Win For Yankees

Last Night's Action: Opening Day Win For Yankees

Yankees 7 Anaheim 5: The rain held off, the rings were distributed and the Yankees won. That’s about as close to perfect as you can get. Nick Johnson homered and A-Rod and Jeter added two RBI’s each. Andy Pettitte went six shutout innings with the bullpen backing him up until David Robertson faltered in the ninth. But, Mariano Rivera came in and shut the door to preserve the win and send the Yankees to their fifth win of the season. more ›

Last Night's Action: Still Waiting for the Playoffs

Last Night's Action: Still Waiting for the Playoffs

- Mets 12, Nationals 6: What's left for the Mets this season? All they have to do is rest their regulars, fine tune their starting pitching (no crying in baseball, right?), and figure out who their first round opponent. Last night, potential fourth starter, John Maine took the mound and didn't look all that impressive - not the best way to earn a spot in the starting rotation. Maine allowed four runs over five innings, but still picked up the win thanks to a six run 5th inning when the Mets batted around the lineup. Jose Reyes and David Wright both had 3 RBI in the win. Unfortunately for the Nationals, Nick Johnson broke his femur in the 8th inning when he collided with Austin Kearns. more ›

Last Night's Action: Mets Get to 70; Yankees Use Homers to Win

Last Night's Action: Mets Get to 70; Yankees Use Homers to Win

- Mets 6, Nationals 4: John Maine's scoreless inning streak surely couldn't last. Former Yankee Nick Johnson ended the streak at 26 with a home run in the 4th inning of last night's win against the Nationals. Maine's chance of winning his third game ended in the 6th inning when the Nationals scored 3 runs, chasing him from the game. The Mets scored two in the 7th to break a 4-4 tie with RBI from Jose Valentin and Michael Tucker. Billy Wagner pitched a perfect 9th inning for his 27th save of the season. And for those readers that like to place the Mets in the AL East for comparison (not sure why you would) - their 70 wins would put them atop the Yankees. more ›

Battling on a Good Day

Battling on a Good Day

By all accounts, the Mets had a good day yesterday. They unveiled their new stadium plans and picked up a 10-5 win against the Washington Nationals. Pedro Martinez made his first start of the season and was less than stellar. While Martinez won the game, he allowed 4 hits, 5 runs (4 earned), and 5 walks. While he did strike out six, Pedro hit three Nationals hitters, including hitting Jose Guillen twice. In the 5th inning, when Guillen was hit for the 2nd time in the game (and 5th time in his career by Pedro), he took steps towards the pitcher's mound. Paul Lo Duca had to restrain Guillen who obviously has reason to suspect that Martinez intentionally hit him. The incident caused both benches and bullpens to clear. Following the momentary interruption, Nick Johnson promptly hit a three-run homer. more ›

Mets Wright Ship

After four innings, the Mets had a 4-0 run, and when Jae Seo exited the game in the top of the 7th inning, the Mets were ahead 4-1. Immediately after entering the game in relief, Mike Stanton gave up a 3 run homer to the light hitting Endy Chavez. Lucky for the Mets, the Expos played to their record of 33-61 and lost the game in the 8th inning. Wigginton walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Todd Ziele then hit a grounder to Tony Batista, who threw the ball to Nick Johnson. Johnson flat out dropped the ball, allowing Wigginton to score and the Mets eventually won, 5-4 (box score). more ›

Will the Farm Do the "Evil Empire" In?

Will the Farm Do the "Evil Empire" In?

While Gothamist isn't saying that all these deals were busts, it certainly is troubling. What are the Yankees to do this year when they need that big trade to push them into the playoffs? Certainly, they can't trade away their prospects because they have none. We're sure that Brian Cashman and George Steinbrenner will think of something before the July 31st trading deadline because they really need a consistent 5th starter. Right now, their hopes pin on their current crop of prospects and the June 7th draft where the Yankees hope to increase their system wide depth. more ›
