Next Wednesday a cornucopia of comedians (Dave Attell, Louis C.K., Artie Lange and more) will gather at Town Hall for the The Gerry Red Wilson Foundation Comedy Benefit. Greg Fitzsimmons is one of the comedians responsible for putting together the show, which will raise awareness about meningitis (a disease that struck three people in his life, one of which was Gerry Red Wilson). You can buy tickets here.

Last night's cold front didn't bring as much rain as expected but it did cool us down and clear out much of the mugginess, making today feel a whole lot more comfortable than the rest of the week. The dew point temperature has dropped from a miserable 76 Wednesday afternoon to a reasonable 59 this morning. Our bodies cool by evaporating perspiration away from our skin. The closer the dew point is to our skin temperature, the less cooling can occur, hence the expression "yes, but it's a dry heat".

Next Wednesday at sundown the Jewish high holiday of Yom Kippur begins - a 24 hour period of fasting and atonement. After a full day without food or drink, many Jews ritually break their annual fast with the "other" Jewish cuisine - Chinese. But, even more members of "the Tribe" default to the classic urban Judaic breakfast for break-the-fast - a smoked fish-palooza featuring a bevy of assorted bagels and cream cheese spreads.

Next Wednesday will be the 60th session of the General Assembly and the 2005 World Summit at the United Nations. Which means New York City is gonig to be under some serious security and gridlock for three days. As it will be the "largest single gathering of world leaders in history next week," there's a hell of a lot of planning going on at the city and federal levels. Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said, "It will be a General Assembly like no other," and Secret Service agent A.T. Smith told Newsday, "I don't think we've ever been more prepared because there was a lot of emphasis placed on the fact that this is the highest-attended General Assembly in history." Which means that with 227 heads of state (plus an ex-president, like Bill Clinton) in the mix, there will be street closing, vehicle searches, even more subway security, a seven mile no-fly zone, and tons and tons of police officers on the street. Okay, now Gothamist understands a little better why the U.N. had to advertise its apologies.

We can't help agreeing with some people that something seems slightly off in the tone of the Times's "Class Matters" series. Maybe it should be ascribed to the paper's status as one of the American elite's most important organs; maybe it's because the paper is an exemplar of that peculiar New York parochialism that views most people and things west of the Hudson with surprise and/or wonder. Class plays itself out differently in New York than elsewhere. There's something heartening about a place so densely populated that almost everyone ends up rubbing shoulders, but that also means that everyone is regularly confronted with stomach-turning displays of wealth and poverty.

So you’ve been good all week. Brought lunch to work, only drank during happy hour specials and cabbed it only in dire situations (read: heels over 4 inches or 2 minutes until the game starts). Now you have that extra $225 burning a hole in your pocket and you’re just not sure how to spend it. Ok, so maybe you have a few ideas on how to spend - but come on, how many Derek Jeter bobble heads do you really need?

Mark your calendars: Next Wednesday, November 24, is when the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade ballooons will be blown up along Central Park West, at West 81st and West 77th Street. Gothamist was there last year and had a great time, navigating our way through a mob of parents and their children ("BARNEY!!!!"). Thanksgiving is traditionally Gothamist's favorite holiday, since it centers around eating a lot of yummy food. New York magazine has had a great Thanksgiving planner, with recipes as well as tips (places to eat, shops to get treats, events); we've been stocking up on butternut squash and eyeing various pie recipes. What are you doing for your Thanksgiving?
