After Three Straight Losses, Jets Travel to Oakland

What has happened to the Jets? Three straight wins to open the season had them flying high, but now three consecutive losses, including one to the lowly Bills at home, has the Mark Sanchez Messiah Watch on hold. And make no mistake, Sanchez has been to blame for two of the three losses. His turnovers cost the Jets against the Saints -- they led to two return touchdowns -- and he had a five-interception meltdown in last week's 16-13 overtime loss to the Bills.

Jets, Dolphins Take Summer Rivalry to Field

When Rex Ryan took over as Jets coach, his first big splash came in a verbal sparring match with Dolphins linebacker Channing Crowder. Entering the teams' Week 5 matchup on Monday night, the Jets (3-1) have a distinct edge over the Dolphins (1-3), who have already lost quarterback Chad Pennington for the season.

Mark Sanchez On His Okay First Start: "I Learned A Lot"

Brand new Jet Mark Sanchez, on the #5 draft pick this year, started his first NFL game last night—a preseason game against the Ravens— and the first moments were ugly. As the NY Times put it, "Early on, Sanchez played at a panic-inducing level. His first pass, short and wobbly after linebacker Ray Lewis knocked him backward, landed in the hands of defensive tackle Haloti Ngata, who rumbled 25 yards into the end zone for a 7-0 lead." (Of course, that was the very defense that Jets coach Rex Ryan helped create as the Raven's former defensive coordinator.) Golden Boy Sanchez did improve as the night went on, but the Jets' other quarterback, Kellen Clemens, did well enough in the 24-23 loss for Ryan to say there was still no decision on who the starting QB would be—the Daily News's QB-meter appears to give a teeny advantage to Sanchez. Sanchez summed up the night, "A great experience. Not the best start on Monday night, but I learned quite a bit."

Earlier this week, Jets running back Thomas Jones was on Hot 97, where Mister Cee wanted to know what Jones felt about "Brett Favre throwing the team under the bus"—and Jones let him know. He said, "We're a team and we win together ... but at the same time, you can't turn the ball over and expect to win... The other day, the three interceptions really hurt us. I mean, that's just reality. If I were to sit here and say, 'Oh, man, it's OK,' that's not reality. ... I don't like it, I know everybody else on the team doesn't like it.

Brett's Bicep Boo Boo

The results of Jets quarterback Brett Favre are back, and sources tell ESPN that he was "told by doctors that pain in his right shoulder is from a torn biceps tendon and some calcification in the area, but the New York Jets quarterback would need nothing more than arthroscopic surgery to repair the injury." In fact, Favre could "might be able to avoid an arthroscopic procedure altogether if he decides to play a 19th NFL season." The Jets have made it clear they'd love to have the 39-year-old for another season—hell, the Post even headlined its sports back page "WOODY FOR BRETT," a nod to Jets owner Woody Johnson's fondness for Favre. On the coaching side, the Jets are still hoping to talk to former Steelers coach Bill Cowher. A source told Newsday earlier reports that Cowher didn't want to talk to the Jets were unfounded: "We have gotten no indication from him that he would not take the position based on the front office power structure."

From Mangenius to Manboob

Yesterday, the Jets' firing of coach Eric Mangini brought some satisfaction to fans and sports writers. But owner Woody Johnson's and general manager's apparent inclination to keep aging quarterback Brett Favre has some scratching their heads. The Post's Steve Serby writes:

If Johnson and GM Mike Tannenbaum are really serious about staying with Favre and a right arm that needed an MRI yesterday, a scattershot right arm that will be 40 years old in October, then they aren't moving forward. They are being held hostage to a pipe dream that our favorite Hall of Fame icon can go Pack to the future and remain forever young, and they are holding their next head coach hostage to that pipe dream as well while Favre holds them all hostage with his Shakespearian lament, To Play Or Not to Play?
Some players agree: Kerry Rhodes said, "If he's dedicated and he wants to come back and do this and do it the right way and come here and be here when we're here in training camp and the minicamps and working out with us and doing all those things, then I'm fine with it. But don't come back if it's going to be halfhearted or he doesn't want to put the time in with us."

Jets Fire Coach Eric Mangini

Jets owner Woody Johnson and general manager Mike Tannenbaum just announced that coach Eric Mangini will not be returning next year. Johnson said:

We met with the coach this morning...We thanked him for all the good things he had done for us, we thanked him for his dedication and his loyalty. But he understood... For the current New York Jets organization, we've made the decision to move on. It's a judgment call. This is not a decision that we reached yesterday or 10 minutes ago. We don't take this decision lightly. We want to build on the successful foundation that he's laid.
They said they would look for a new coach and that they wanted Brett Favre, who is undergoing an MRI today, to return. Also: Defensive coordinator Bob Sutton and offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer were fired as well.

Although the Jets gave their fans a partial reprieve from personal seat licenses by not including upper deck season ticket holders in the scheme, the Jets are charging PSLs for 2,000 of the best seats in the new, under-construction stadium. The Jets have launched a new TV ad to entice fans--and it includes a familiar face:

Yesterday afternoon, the Giants and Jets announced it ended talks with Allianz, a German insurance company that was interested in buying stadium naming rights at the new stadium.

Reports that Patriots quarterback Tom Brady suffered a torn ACL suggest that he may be out for the season. Brady went down on the 16th play in the Patriots' home opener against the Kansas City Chiefs yesterday-- he screamed in pain when Chiefs safety Bernard Pollard hit his left leg. Pats receiver Randy Moss said the team is ready to embrace backup Matt Cassel, who led the team to a win, but Moss added that Brady's injury "kind of hurts to be honest with you." Next up for the Patriots: Meeting the Jets at Gang Green's home opener this coming Sunday. Remember, the Pats coach Bill Belichick was assistant coach at the Jets under Parcells; when Parcells left, he was supposed to take over as coach, but went to New England instead.

More than 10,500 fans went out to Hofstra University yesterday to see Brett Favre take his first snaps as a New York Jet. The crowd was the most to ever come out to a Jets practice, over four times what you would normally see at training camp. With brand new #4 jerseys in limited supply, some in attendance even broke out the cheeseheads to show their love for the new quarterback. The hysteria was so overwhelming that fans "even cheered Favre for throwing the ball out of bounds when there was no receiver open." Head Coach Eric Mangini announced that Favre definitely would start Saturday's first preseason game against the Redskins at the Meadowlands.

Now that he's been reinstated, it seems like Brett Favre will be traded from Green Bay. And the New York Jets have been mentioned--his agent told the AP that the three-time MVP will head either to the Tampa Bay Bucaneers or Jets and said earlier that Favre was "ready to play." WCBS 2 said the Jets might be more of a pawn for Favre, noting he's leaning towards a trade to Tampa Bay, "could be trying to leverage Gang Green for Packers' sake." The Jets had no comment.

Yes and no.

Maybe the Jets shouldn't have been underdogs against the Dolphins, but no one figured they'd roll as easily as they did in their 40-13 win in Miami on Sunday. Miami remained winless at 0-12 as the Jets improved to 3-9 -- with two of those wins coming against Miami. Playing without Jerricho Cotchery and his finger injury, the Jets did have Laveranues Coles back earlier than expected from a high ankle sprain. He responded...

"Broadway Joe" Namath (who's now hitting AARP-age) will be larger than life when his life story hits sacks the big screen. Starring as the Hall of Fame quarterback (and ladies man) will be none other than Jake Gyllenhaal, who will likely only have to do a touch of bulking up for the role. While other quarterbacks racked up bigger lifetime stats, Namath became the first football player to achieve rock-star status. The pic will tell the...

A look at some noteworthy television this week:

A look at some noteworthy programs this week:

In keeping with our lists of events from 2006, here are some of the sports stories that Gothamist found compelling in the past year. It ranges from the playoff disappointment from the Mets and the Yankees to the welcome performances of last season's Rangers, this season's Jets and Rutgers.

Bye weeks allow football teams time to regroup, take a few days off and recover from any injury problems they have. Some teams get burned by getting byes too late in the season, and others have bad luck when they get theirs only a few weeks in. The Jets had no complaints about their open date. Not only was it scheduled at the midway point of the season, it capped a three-game stretch against three below-average NFL teams. But after scraping by in the first two of those games, the Jets fell flat in a 20-13 loss to Cleveland on Sunday and enter their bye at 4-4.

What the Yankees have, the Mets must also have. At least when it comes to television networks. Today, Sterling Entertainment, Time Warner, and Comcast launch SportsNet New York, a 24-hour regional sports network. The network will carry as many as 125 Mets games in its first season and will be the "official" TV home of the New York Jets. Of course, they won't be carrying any actual Jets games, but that's a minor detail. In addition to the Mets and Jets, the channel will carry basketball and football games from the Big East and Big Ten. That's great news for Gothamist as we can't get enough Big Ten action.

The stabbing brawl that occured in a men's bathroom during Sunday's New York Jets game was actually sparked by the Jets' terrible playing. The Post reports that Thomas Conwell saw Shawn Hundley wearing a Chad Penninton jersey, so Conwell told him he was a "f---ing p--sy" for wearing it. Pennington was injured last season, and then again at the beginning of this season! He's like the Samuel L. Jackson character in Unbreakable! The two men fought over Chad's honor/disgrace outside the restroom, with Conwell slashing Hundley as well as a bystander who tried to break up the fight. Conwell has a history of arrests, including one for being a part of a gang attack, but his girlfriend says that he was acting in self-defense. Hey, Gothamist isn't happy with the Jets this season this year, but football games are brutal. We almost got into a fight in the beer line at a Jets pre-season game, teaching us never ever to leave our seats and not to drink anything so we wouldn't have to use the bathroom.

You know its been a tough season when Jets fans look back so fondly to last season's cardiac-inducing AFC Divisional playoff victory over the San Diego Chargers. Remember linebacker Eric Barton's penalty, which could have been the costliest in franchise history? Anyhow, with things looking down but not yet out for the Jets (2-5), a date with a San Diego (4-4) team that looks like last year was no fluke does not seem like an ideal situation, even after a bye week.

After being panned by critics for being ugly, the proposed stadium for the Jets has received a makeover. It's smaller and has less mass than the previous design, but the most noticeable difference is a "veil" of glass around the outside. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to help the design much. We kind of think it needs something more ... opaque. Where are those people from Extreme Makeover: Home Edition when you need them? Then again, the only Pennington Gothamist could possibly bear in the stadium is Chad Pennington.

Today marks the start of training camp for both the New York Giants and the New York Jets. Both teams are coming off of disappointing seasons and are obviously looking for improvement. The Giants finished 2003 with a 4-12 record and in a four way tie for the worst record in the NFL. The Jets finished marginally better at 6-10 and with 8 less wins behind the AFC East, and the eventual Super Bowl winning, Patriots.

Several thoughts came to Gothamist when we first heard this plan. When are they going to have the game? It would have to be before New Year's so it doesn't interfere with the "first-tier" bowls or New Year's Eve events in New York. If it is earlier, that would the possible teams that come could be no-names or teams that aren't that good and does New York really want to host a second or third-tier game? The question of who wants to play in New York when it's cold isn't a problem as long as it's not a B.C.S. Bowl. Hell, if you can have the Humanitarian Bowl on blue artificial turf in Boise, you can have a game in the New York winter. Lastly, what the hell are they thinking? Showcase for Big East football? That's the biggest joke we've ever heard.
