Girl Shot on the Upper East Side

A 25-year-old was shot last night while walking on East 91st Street, near Third Avenue. The gunman, who jumped out of his car at 11:30 pm and fired two bullets, one into her neck, was the young woman's boyfriend. "I heard the gunshots and it startled me," a bystander told the New York Post. "I was afraid to come outside. After 10 minutes, I heard the sirens and came outside." According to a doorman who witnessed the shooting, the jilted lover jumped back into his car and sped off. But he was cuffed by police shortly after and taken in for questioning. Meanwhile, his girlfriend rode to New York Hospital, where cops say her injuries are not considered life-threatening. more ›

MTA Bus Hits School Van Transporting Children

Earlier this morning, an MTA bus collided with a school van transporting children in Fresh Meadows, Queens. Details of the accident are thin, but initial reports say that up to 9 people are injured, most of which are children. The collision occurred just after 8 a.m. when the Q46 bus struck the van. The FDNY says that two critically injured children were sent to Long Island Jewish Hospital with one other child. Three other children were sent to Mary Immaculate Hospital and two more people were taken to Queens General Hospital and to New York Hospital Medical Center of Queens. more ›

Seven Injured in Queens Home Explosion

Yesterday afternoon, a gas explosion in a Sunnyside home burned a 67-year-old woman over 90% of her body. Six other people were also injured, as over 200 people needed to be evacuated and over a hundred firefighters responded. The family of the tow truck driver who was right on top of the steam pipe that exploded in Midtown spoke about 21-year-old Gregory McCullough's progress. His mother, Tanya McCullough-Stewart, told the NY Times he had opened his eyes for the first time last week, "They can’t tell us if he’ll be O.K. because his injuries are too severe. Drunk Driver Crashes Into City Bus, 16 Injured

Early yesterday morning, the Q65 bus was hit by a Nissan Maxima whose driver ran a red light at Booth Memorial Avenue and 164th Street in Flushing. According to the MTA, the "Maxima was heading east on Booth Memorial Avenue and entered the intersection through a red light. The Maxima struck the left front corner of the bus." And from the looks of the pictures and TV footage, it was a crazy crash. The Maxima and bus ended up off the road, "knocking down a traffic signal pole." more ›

Here's one for the friends of the Karen Savillo. The Daily News reports that Savillo was critically injured when a drunk driver hit the car she was riding in early yesterday morning. Alexie Quiles's Ford SUV "veered across two lanes before sideswiping" Savillo's friend's Yukon on the Long Island Expressway in Maspeth. The Yukon crashed into a concrete barrier and 41 year old Savillo's head hit the window. more ›

Plane Crash Survivor Says, "I’m so lucky to survive."

The woman who was badly burned after the plane carrying Yankees pitcher Cory Lidle and flight instructor Tyler Stanger crashed into her 30th floor apartment finally left the hospital yesterday. Ilane Benhuri, who had the most serious burns among the people injured from the crash, had walked to New York Hospital with the help of her housekeeper immediately after the October 11 crash. She underwent operations and many skin grafts over the past month. After her release, Benhuri spoke to reporters yesterday about her ordeal:

Queens Father Charged With Assaulting His Baby

Thirty-one year old Sukni Yoon was arrested and charged with assault, reckless endangerment and child welfare endangerment after he shook his two month old baby daughter so severely that she now has "irreparable" brain injuries. Yoon also hit Hyewan Yoon on the face and bit her leg "with enough force to leave teeth marks," according to the Queens DA's office. Car Injures Pedestrian on Upper East Side

Sidewalks aren't only for pedestrians - they seem to be made for cars after they are hit by other out of control cars. Yesterday afternoon, an out of control Lexus hit two parked cars after spinning across two lanes on Lexington Avenue near East 62nd Street. The parked cars then hit a pedestrian on the sidewalk. The NY Post says the victim, a Venezulan tourist, was "slumped across the trunk of the car, her legs dangling above the ground." The woman was admitted to New York Hospital in serious condition, but was upgraded to stable. The police did not press any charges yet, but the cause of the crash is still unknown. Oh, and the Lexus caught fire. more ›

Livery Cab Kills Socialite Philanthropist

Andrea Bronfman, billionaire Charles Bronfman's wife, was killed yesterday morning by a livery cab driver making a left from Fifth Avenue at East 65th Street. The Post reports that Bronfman had been out walking her dog and just "stepped off the curb" when the cab hit her. Her injuries included pelvic injuries, a lacerated liver and broken ribs, plus internal bleeding, and Bronfman died at New York Hospital. Bronfman was active in numerous charities, including founding Gift of New York for September 11 victims' families and Jewish charities; her husband's father founded the Seagram company. Police did not give the driver a summons, but they are looking into the matter - remember, yesterday morning was very rainy. more ›
