City yellow cabs will get more colorful in the fall of 2007 as the city embarks on a project to decorate cabs with flower decals. Yes, you heard it right - the City of New York is working on the temporary, mobile public art project, Garden in Transit, which will "celebrate the 100th anniversary of New York’s first motorized taxi." Starting this fall, children will paint flowers onto decals that will then be placed on thousands of yellow cabs. Cab owners will not be required to put the decals on, but they can certainly volunteer their cabs for the project - and we suspect many will, as they will probably be attractive to that all important taxi fare - the tourist. (But we'll have to ask New York Hack and Famous Fat Dave if they will.) The cabs will flower for 16 weeks, from September through December 2007.
With some not great news about cab drivers lately, we'd like to draw our attention to one of our favorite blogging cabbies, New York Hack. And she recently picked up a famous fare - Jon Stewart. This came after some rude drivers got pissed off at her after she wouldn't let them cut her off. Well, they were actually momentarily polite, making this a classic story:
At the next red light, they pulled up next to me and yelled, "Asshole!" Determined to try and stay cool for at least one full shift (which, for some reason, has been a lot harder these days), I just laughed and said, "That's very original."Continue reading "Hacking It"

Usually when Gothamist is riding in a cab in New York, we're just happy if we can communicate, get to our destination in one piece, and that the driver doesn't get lost. All reasonable expectations, we think. The Taxi and Limousine Commission announced their cab driver of the year yesterday, who, by most standards seems to have done his job very well. Hossam Abdalla, an Egyptian cab driver, has been driving a taxi since 1999, returned $1 million worth of gold, diamonds, and titanium left in his cab last year. With all that, he could have joined the some of those other millionaires out there.
Delicious has long been an indispensible tool for our work here at Gothamist-- we have bookmarks for dozens of tags and monitor them throughout the day. Our favorites include Brooklyn, New York, and Photography, but our favorite tag is definitely "NYC." Starting today, Josh and his pals have added a new feature to make the NYC tag page even better: you can now see the most popular recent NYC tags. The default view for the NYC page is to show every link tagged with NYC-- often the same ones repeat, and it's a lot to keep up with-- this page makes it much easier to see the most important links. As of this morning, these are the NYC links that top the list:
