When chef Joe Dobias first decided to open up his own place he originally wanted to open a food truck or a sandwich shop. Instead his girlfriend and partner Jill Schulster persuaded him it was better to start with a restaurant and then work their way down, and so JoeDoe was born (for which we are thankful). But now, three years later, Dobias is realizing his dream. Yesterday afternoon Joe and Jill opened up their second eatery, a sandwich shop on First Avenue and Eighth Street called JoeDough, of course. Finally, East Villagers can dine on brisket sandwiches from noon till all hours of the night.

Mama's Food Shop's Homecooking Hits Williamsburg
Finally, East Village transplants to Williamsburg can get food delivered to their door just like Mama's used to make. Well, like Mama's Food Shop still makes. The popular Alphabet City homecooking joint has just opened an outpost South 4th Street and delivery starts tonight (delivery map here)! Fried chicken with brussels sprouts and a side of apple cobbler, anyone?
MePa Newcomer Romera Trying To Make "Neuro-Gastronomy" Happen
Forget about molecular gastronomy, the next big thing in New York dining could very well be...Neuro-gastronomy? That's how Argentinian chef and doctor Miguel Sanchez Romera describes the food he is serving at his new Meatpacking restaurant Romera, which just opened in the Dream Hotel. According to the chef that means his food is created using "a thoughtful study of the organoleptic properties of each ingredient. The result is a natural cuisine driven by the importance of the neurosensory perceptions, the taste-memory and the emotions of food." So, yeah, this joint is nuts.

Williamsburg Bar Savalas Now "Masten Lake," A Restaurant On Bedford Ave
The creepy/sexy Williamsburg mainstay Savalas—where a man once publicly displayed his pierced foreskin—closed in January after six years of DJs, dancing, and debauchery on Bedford Avenue. A nation mourned. And everyone wondered, what would take its place? If you've been observing the ongoing Manhattanization of Williamsburg, you may not be shocked to see that Savalas has been completely gutted and transformed into some sort of bourgy cheese, wine, pasta, and protein restaurant called Masten Lake.

Photos: David Bouley's Brushstroke Uses Books For Walls
Books for walls? Now we've seen everything! And so will you if you step inside David Bouley's long-delayed Japanese restaurant Brushstroke, which puts 12,000 boring old (recycled) paperbacks to good use as the walls in the bar/lounge. Who will be the first sake-bombed customer to idly pull out one of the books and bring the entire restaurant crashing down? Well, first it has to open; after years of anticipation, the restaurant (menu below) is finally expected to officially debut on April 20th (thought it's in "soft-open" mode now).

Try On The Trilby, Take Three For Cooper Square Hotel
Cooper Square's answer to the West Village's Fedora has arrived: Called The Trilby, the hat-named lounge/restaurant (which also compliments El Sombrero on the LES) opened Friday in the Cooper Square Hotel. This is the controversial hotel's third attempt to score a win with the space, which was previously Scott Conant's Faustina, and before that Govind Armstrong's Table 8. This time around, there are no boldfaced names involved, and the interior—which some critics described as "unworkable"—has been totally revamped, with tufted leather couches, vintage adornments and cozy booths.

Big Southern Hospitality Brings Memphis BBQ to Hell's Kitchen
The somewhat fratastic Upper East Side BBQ joint Southern Hospitality just opened a massive second location in Hell's Kitchen. As you can see, it's a colorful and lively-looking establishment, with largely unfinished 300 year-old wood on the floors, walls and ceiling; exposed brick; and antique mirrors. There is a giant antler chandelier (now we've seen everything), lyrics from the Million Dollar Quartet spelled out in rusty iron and neon lights, and nods to Memphis rock and roll sprinkled throughout. And in an attempt to reach beyond the backwards baseball cap set, co-owner Eytan Sugarman (and his partner Isiah Thomas) brought on wine guy Gary Vaynerchuk to curate a 50-varietal wine list to match the menu. (There are 50 varieties of bourbon, too.)

Photos: David Burke Kitchen Open in The James New York Hotel
Gregarious chef and restless restaurateur David Burke is a big fun guy with a lot on his plate. Besides overseeing his local restaurants Townhouse, David Burke at Bloomingdales, and Fishtail, the famously whimsical chef (think Cheesecake Lollipop Tree) also operates eateries in Chicago, New Jersey, and Connecticut. Recently he opened up the Stadium Grill inside the massive Bowlmor Times Square. (Nachos in a can, anyone?) He doesn't have Hawaiian Tropic Zone to worry about any more, but now he's added the David Burke Kitchen to his portfolio. Step inside!

Old Village Speakeasy Fedora Reopens Under Gabe Stulman
West Village Italian restaurant Fedora first did business as a speakeasy starting in 1917 under the ownership of Charles Dorato, who, after Prohibition ended, started serving food and called it Charlie's Garden. In 1952, Charles's son Henry and his wife Fedora—who, the Villager reports, is named not for the hat but for the opera by Umberto Giordano—took over and changed the name. At the time, it was one of just two restaurants in the neighborhood that was patronized by heterosexuals but also welcomed same-sex patrons. Popular with local regulars and a small subsection of fashionable artsy types, Fedora stayed under the Dorato family's control until last summer, when Fedora retired at the age of 90. (Her husband Henry passed away in 1997.)
Asellina Opens in Gansevoort Park Hotel (Photos, Menu)
The swish newish Gansevoort Park Hotel has opened its ground floor restaurant/lounge Asellina, so let's take a look around. The spacious Italian establishment has two leather-wrapped bars, multiple dining rooms, a big fireplace, copper ceilings, and an "earthy" concrete tile floor intended to lend the space a rustic feel. It's pretty spacious, and in the spring, Asellina will open a garden patio grown over with greenery and moss, under "a canopy of copper filament bulbs." We're told that contrary to previous reports, the name does not mean "little ass," but Google does confirm that there was a famous tavern in Pompeii called Asellina, and it may have been a brothel.
