Should International Pillow Fight Day Be Abolished?

"Pillows are for smothering lazy unwanted children and pretending to be pregnant to get a seat on the train, not for precious public displays of mass infantilization. Grow up and get a job, bums!" more ›

Annual Bubble Battle Returns This June!

Annual Bubble Battle Returns This June!

If pillow fights, Jedi duels, flash mobs, or not wearing pants on the subway are all not your thing, perhaps you'll find joy in the annual Bubble Battle, returning to the city June 18th. Or perhaps you'll be repulsed by the idea like one Gothamist staffer who audibly sighed upon hearing the news that strangers will gather en masse to blow magical, shiny little bubbles all over Times Square. Because, the horror, right? Here's the scoop, from organizers at Newmindspace: more ›

Spoiler Alert! The L Train Is Coming

Ever since the MTA started putting up those LED schedules in the subways, New Yorkers have been plagued by the knowledge that trains are arriving, even if they didn't want to know! Now Newmindspace and Jason Eppink are protecting straphangers from learning of arriving trains too soon. Eppink explains: more ›

Bubble Battle Descends on Times Square

With all the crime and corruption in this city, it's nice to know that sometimes all you need is a flash mob armed with soapy water to brighten your day. Brought to you by the same folks responsible for the Jedi Battle and the Union Square Pillow Fight, Bubble Battle NYC 2010 gathered at Father Duffy Square yesterday with bubble toys, bubble guns and plenty of bubble solution to launch a harmless attack on the city. Newmindspace says the event is "loosely based on the Dr. Seuss Classic The Butter Battle Book." We're glad they stuck with bubbles—butter would have been a lot harder to clean up! more ›

Jedi Knights, Sith Lords Battle On LES

Hundreds nerds were out in full force last night for Newmindspace's LED Lightsaber Battle on the Lower East Side. Starting at 9 p.m., Jedi masters showed up at Chrystie Park to battle the Sith Lords, ring in the summer and get their inner Star Wars Kid out. Newmindspace co-founder Kevin Bracken told us, "Last night was superlative! I suspect there were roughly 500 people there, ranging from casual observers to hardcore Jedi. As always, the event attracted people from every age category and neighborhood. Parents with children were particularly pleased." Too bad all the Marines were probably hanging out near Times Square—we bet they could have shown off some sweet fighting skillz! more ›

They also talked to one combatant who told them, "We went to Century 21 to get our pillows, and all the pillows were sold out. All the cashiers were so confused, like, 'Why are all the pillows selling out now?'" more ›

This past Saturday, Newmindspace, the group behind the Bubble Battle and Pillow Fight, held the first NYC Big Wheel Race 2008 in Central Park. With directions like, "You'll need a helmet and other protective gear. Your vehicle's seat must, at its lowest point, be lower than 12 inches. That's low. Wheel size is open. Rubber wheels are strongly discouraged," a number of Big Wheel enthusiasts appeared in elaborate costumes to race down the hill. more ›
