As many have already pointed out, the imminent redevelopment of Coney Island may very well turn out to be a garish Disneyfied nightmare, complete with a Vegas-style hotel or two. A multi-million dollar food court, and a string of expensive restaurants can’t be far behind. Neptune Avenue in winter may resemble one fifteen block-long auto repair shop, with gas fumes and broken glass in the streets, but for us it’s the old Coney Island takeout over whatever neon-encrusted dining room the developers will throw at us. If you consider yourself a New York pizza lover, there are a couple dozen pizzerias you must try before you can even pretend to know of what you speak. You may have heard that Patsy’s of East Harlem serves a floppy, lifeless slice. But throngs of loyal fans have lived and died by Patsy’s for decades, so if you want to talk intelligently about the pizza in this town, you have to go and decide for yourself. Some critics claim that John’s is just a shell of its former self. Yet there is a line (of tourists) out the door almost every night. So you’ve got to get in line and taste it for yourself before you make any judgments.

At this rate, it is only a matter of time, albeit a lot of time, before New York has a 7-Eleven on every other block the way suburbia does. New Yorkers love their 24-hour corner delis and bodegas, but the corporate juggernaut that is 7-Eleven may make them a thing of the past. Apparently, nothing can compete with the allure of the mighty Slurpee.
