Week in Rock: Alt Country Dance Edition

Of Montreal Makes Brooklyn Dance Last night Of Montreal took the stage at Music Hall of Williamsburg for the second show of their three-night run at the venue. After frontman Kevin Barnes rode a white stallion onto the stage at a Roseland show last fall, we knew we had to witness this show with our own eyes. While there were no real animals this time around (these are recessionary times after all), the antics were plenty, with tigers, colorful projections and explosions of pink feathers. Accompanying the over-the-top stage show was the music, of course, and their eccentric brand of indie pop was delivered with the usual extra dose of dance. Take a gander for yourself in the video below, and if you are looking for some Friday fun, we hear there may be some $20 tickets at the door for tonight's show. —Jen Carlson

Rain on the Way

There are three forces of nature to discuss today. The first is the weather forecast. As it heads out to sea, a low pressure system is going to slide south of the city. We can expect light rain to begin this afternoon and last until noon tomorrow. Today's high will approach 60. Saturday will be a little cooler. Skies should clear by Sunday but you'll want a fleece-lined Easter bonnet as the high may not reach 50 and it will be breezy.

Okay Conor, we get it: you have cool friends. This week, during the Bright Eyes 7-night run at Town Hall, the band promised a special guest each night. So far he's brought out the likes of Lou Reed, Steve Earle, Jenny Lewis, Norah Jones and Ben Kweller. Each played a few songs of their own mid set before joining in jamming with the rest of the group. On the night we went, we were treated to a mini acoustic set by Ben Gibbard and a sit in by Nick Zinner, who among other songs, played the haunting Daniel Johnston cover "Devil Town." But as far as Bright Eyes goes, no matter what you think of the guy and his music, there's no denying that he always makes the extra effort to please his fans in NYC. Whether it be avoiding the larger, expensive venues, playing intimate shows or pulling stunts like this. Conor went out of his way to make each of these shows special, and as a fan, we really appreciate that.

Yes, yes...Last week was Volume 18. We had some counting...issues. Apologies.

There is a band playing Northsix tonight called Duran Duran Duran. We don't know anything about them, but based on their name alone we'll suggest checking them out. If you want to go with the safe bet though, head to the Delancey where Pela starts off their April residencey tonight.

Gothamist posts on the capture of a NYC perv thanks to Little Brother and a camera phone. They also scour the city for vodka martinis and Shamrock shakes and spot the friend from the Wonder Years at a city law firm. New York police think that Littlejohn is their man.

Antony and the Johnsons will play their first NYC show since winning the UK's Mercury Music Prize last month. The past year has seen Antony rise from a relatively unknown eccentric NYC club performer to an international superstar. His headlining show at Carnegie Hall on Thursday, and his upcoming appearance on Letterman, are two signs of his well deserved success. Those attending the Carnegie show will also be treated to a rare opening set by vocalist Jimmy Scott, "the man whom Joseph Hooper, in a New York Times Magazine profile, called 'perhaps the most unjustly ignored American singer of the 20th century.' [Fantasy Jazz].

Day 2 was significantly busier than Day 1. All in all, we made it to 12 different shows between 10:00am and 2am, we'll highlight the highlights here.

great, but want to check them out for ourselves, since we do like this video. Also check out the last sell outs post for more info on future shows we're not relisting here.

Time to start the new year off right, by seeing live music and not being left out on the cold cold sidewalk listening to your favorite songs echoing down the snow-filled street. This month there are a lot of hyped up bands coming our way. We are mainly talking about the Arcade Fire, if you don't have tickets we don't know what to tell you. If you're good at haikus you could try this contest. We'll also be having some ticket give-a-ways for some shows this month, and maybe MAYBE there will be an Arcade Fire one. But in the meantime, here are some tickets on sale that you can still buy:

Coolfer hasn't attended a music festival since the 1995 edition of Lollapalooza, but this Saturday's Little Steven's International Underground Garage Festival is promising enough to prompt a ticket buy. Most bands won't play more than a few songs, but the line-up is amazing and mixes the old and new very well: The Stooges, the New York Dolls, the Strokes, Chocolate Watchband, the Pretty Things, Big Star (Alex Chilton is pictured to the right), the Raveonettes, the Romantics, the Mooney Suzuki, the Fuzztones, the Shazam, the Electric Prunes, the Star Spangles, the High Dials, the Dictators and too many more to mention. That's a lot of bands for $20 ($25 at the gate). The concert will be held at Randall's Island. Gates open at--are you ready for this?--10am. Show starts at 11am. It's gonna be a long day, and a very long day if the rain hangs around through the weekend.
