This Memorial Day weekend offers the most 2007 weddings so far in the NY Times' Weddings & Celebrations section: A whopping 43 weddings! But, of all the announcements, our favorite is the one of Thea Spyer and Edith Windsor. Spyer, a 75-year-old psychologist in Manhattan, and Windsor, a 77-year-old retired computer systems analyst for IBM, were married in Toronto earlier this week, but actually met decades ago.

Dr. Spyer and Ms. Windsor met in 1965 in New York at Portofino, a restaurant in the West Village.

And like that, the United States run in the 2006 World Cup is over. Four years of hard work is down the drain as the US Men's National Team scored only one goal in their three-game German experience. Ghana eliminated the United States in group play today by defeating them 2-1 and Italy defeated the Czech Republic 2-0. The lone American goal of the tournament was scored by Clint Dempsey in the 43rd minute of today's game. The game was filled with fouls (nearly 50 for both teams, but Ghana by a 2:1 ratio), including a controversial one towards the end of the first half which resulted in a penalty kick goal for Ghana. The penalty kick proved to be the deciding goal in the US loss.

The league, in its second season, currently has only four teams - Beijing Tigers, Tianjin Lions, Shanghai Eagles and Guangdong Leopards - with two more teams to be added next year. One team will be Rupert Murdoch's and the other will be the Chinese Army's team. Gothamist wonders what their names will be. Fox and the People's Liberation Team are some thoughts that come to mind. There's nothing quite like marketing your own product. If there is any justice in this world, one team will be in Chengdu and will be named the Chengdu Pandas. If that happens, you know Gothamist will be all over that merchandise.
