For many people, the best part about watching hockey is the fights. For those fight-lovers, there's some rumbling between the Rangers and the National Hockey League that could interest you. Back in September, Madison Square Garden sued the NHL for antitrust violations, claiming the league monopolized team promotions via the Rangers' website.

Fans will be able to watch hockey again tonight for the first time in sixteen months as every team in the National Hockey League takes to the ice. Before turning on the game, it might be a good idea to review some of the multiple rule changes that will be in place for the 2005-2006 season.

Hockey didn't have a lot of capital to spend in the first place and it is now the first professional sports league in North American to lose a season to labor woes. For Ranger fans, this might actually be a good thing since they seem to have the lowest wins to dollars spent ratio in the league recently. A cancelled season is actually a relief.

It's a classic case of owners vs. union that you see in almost every sport these days. The NHL says its owners lost $223 million with 20 clubs losing money. They want to control the cost of the salaries and lower the average salary to $1.3 million down from $1.8 million. The NHL also says that 75% of their revenue goes towards player salaries. What they would like is a wage formula that is tied to revenue.
