Can The Toxic Newtown Creek Freeze?

Recently photographer Nate Kensinger headed to the "desolate industrial wasteland" that is Newtown Creek. Last year it was declared a Superfund site by the Environmental Protection Agency, who called it "one of the nation’s most polluted waterways." So we were wondering: does a watery toxic wasteland like this freeze in the winter? The above photo holds the answer: not really! Fine, maybe it's thawed... but we're told Prospect Park Lake is still mostly frozen. more ›

Photos: Creepy, Old, Abandoned Greenpoint Hospital

       

Photographer Nate Kensinger has photos of a real haunted house* in Brooklyn: the Greenpoint Hospital. Built in 1914, it was in operation through 1982, and currently seven towers on the grounds are used as apartments, a homeless shelter, and a new community space. This is a story about the one abandoned building, however: the former nurses residence. The building has seen lots of blood in its day, and reportedly on February 3rd, 1971 "Frank Serpico's inert, blood soaked form was wheeled into the Emergency Room." The site may be developed soon, so Kensinger's photos could be a last look at what is likely to become affordable residential units. more ›

Visiting the Bronx Swamp Before It's Drained

       

Looking for an end of summer day trip? We suggest avoiding the Bronx Swamp, which Nate Kensinger described as a "flooded railroad line below the streets of Mott Haven" that is home to birds, rats, raccoons, mosquitos and maybe a dead body or two. Even though it's acknowledged as a health risk, and the Department of Health & Mental Hygiene sprays it regularly "with larvacide to curb the spread of mosquitos potentially infected with the West Nile Virus," the photographer still made a journey out there. more ›
