Thanks To Science, Our Sewer System Can Now Narc Us Out

What would New York City's sewer system say about its residents? We'd prefer not going there, but Boing Boing is pointing us to this article about sewer sampling revealing patterns of drug use, noting that in Oslo, the drug ecstasy spiked in the sewers around the time of high school graduation! Other drugs found there included cocaine and Zyrtec. more ›

Video Catches Narcotics Cop In Lie, Drug Charges Tossed

Three NYPD detectives and their supervisor have been stripped of their guns and badges pending an Internal Affairs investigation into a false accusation of drug dealing in the lobby of a Bronx building. In early 2009, Omar Tawdeen was arrested for allegedly selling crack cocaine to three people, and detective Francisco Payano testified that he witnessed Tawdeen deal the drugs. But Tawdeen insisted he was "innocent from day one of every single charge in that case," according to his lawyer. And during a pretrial hiring on February 9th, he was vindicated when surveillance video showed that not only didn't Tawdeen sell any drugs, but Payano wasn't even there. All the charges against Tawdeen were tossed out, and Judge Aarons told Payano he should retain a defense lawyer, sources tell the Post. more ›

Cameron Douglas's Narc Secret Spilled In Court

Cameron Douglas's Narc Secret Spilled In Court

Cameron Douglas, son of actor Michael Douglas, was going to be a narc! He was busted with half a pound of meth at the Gansevoort Hotel last year and placed under house arrest, where his girlfriend then smuggled him heroin. Yesterday at a bail hearing his shrink let slip that he was only ever released to house arrest "because he was going to be an informant." The statement was stricken from the record, and his lawyers argued that he should be let go pending sentencing (in April) to undergo treatment for heroin addiction. The judge deferred a ruling, and his lawyer later stated, "Obviously, we continue to be at odds with the government." more ›

What to Do with Pesky Drug Dealing Neighbors

What to Do with Pesky Drug Dealing Neighbors

So we know what keeps you awake at night, but what do you do about it exactly? One Brooklyn resident, for example, is wondering how to get the drug dealer living in the building to STFU. They write:

"I live on the first floor, and I know for a fact that there's a drug dealer in my building. I can hear the transactions happening since they're actually dumb enough to think their voices don't travel through my door when they're standing right next to it. This makes me extremely uncomfortable to know that this type of activity is so close to home. I want to call the police and report this, but I also am wary of the 'don't snitch' edict in this neighborhood. I should also mention that even when not dealing, this guy and some friends are usually smoking blunts in the hallway from 12 a.m. to 2 a.m. on weeknights."
Quite the pickle! You'd think all that second-hand pot smoke would make this person chill out, but considering pot-dealing is a gateway to murdering your neighbors on the first floor, we guess they have reason for concern. To narc or not to narc—any advice? [via Brownstoner] more ›
