As the summer air cools into fall and peach season passes into apple, there's no better place to observe the changing of the season's than in a backyard garden enjoying swell food. Chestnut, whose white French doors sit invitingly on Smith Street in Carroll Gardens, is just the antidote for a meal whose inviting atmosphere is as addictive as you will find its food. Inside, exposed beams and wood planks are complimented by candlelight; outside, a merrily painted picket fence encloses tables illuminated by strung lantern lights.

Ooh, the nice weather arrived a day earlier than Gothamist expected, making for an enjoyable Sunday. Dry air is streaming into town this morning. The dew point temperature has fallen precipitously in the last couple of hours.

We really enjoyed reading about the many restaurant incarnations at 206 East 63rd Street in the NY Times, because there are definitely locations that we think are cursed and pity/salute new management that tries to make a go of it. At 206 East 63rd Street, the eleventh restaurant in 30 years, Haikara Grill, a kosher AND Japanese steakhouse, has been around for a year, and the building's owner, J.Z. Morris, even reduced the restaurant's rent ($15,000) because of the tainted history. The NY Times explains what used to be there:

Terroir is one of those concepts where if you put 50 wine geeks in a room and let them talk among themselves, you can create a heated discussion around dirt. Add to that equation a blind wine tasting and hold it at Daniel and it’s possible that a cheese puff and caviar food fight may erupt. The potential to see little bites of culinary genus thrown maliciously at Masters of Wine and industry greats was too good for us to pass up, so Gothamist gladly accepted an invitation to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Robert Mondavi Winery at a panel discussion titled “A sense of place: The future of terroir”

Last night, the New Jersey Devils retired the number of former defenseman and longtime captain, Scott Stevens. Stevens, who played 22 seasons in the NHL retired last September after 13 seasons with the team. His #4 is the first retired number for the franchise. During his career, Stevens appeared in more games than any other defenseman, and is 5th in games played at all positions. He helped lead the Devils to Stanley Cups in 1995, 2000, and 2003.
