You may be familiar with James Sanders' book Celluloid Skyline: New York and the Movies, which celebrated New York City's role in movies and is a must for any fan of New York, architecture, or film. But even if you haven't, you get a chance to experience it in beyond the pages: Starting tomorrow, Grand Central Terminal's Vanderbilt Hall will be the setting for a Celluloid Skyline exhibit. There will be huge "scenic backing" paintings from old films, film footage, artifacts, displays and more that will show NYC's role in production and as a "mythic city" of the movies. Here's a description:

[The exhibit] will also carry visitors into the dream city of the movies, through “immersive” elements that allow visitors to feel as if they are actually inhabiting the various environments of the filmic city – streets, skyscrapers, rooftops, theaters, waterfronts, interiors – allowing viewers to come away with a greater understanding not only of the moviemaking process, but of the urban character, texture and significance of the real city.

Fans of urban exploration photography and naked women, rejoice, for your day has finally arrived! Naked City Spleen features dozens of pictures of Miru Kim posing in front of various urban ruins, including but not limited to the recently destroyed Greenpoint Terminal Market and the very-soon-to-be-leveled Red Hook Sugar Factory. And lest you think this is just about cheap thrills, Miru has a long essay explaining the project:

Ooh, could the hot thing in dining really be nude dining? The Daily News reported some nudists enjoy meals (but without a soup course) in the buff at a restaurant on West 38th. And they say that the city is losing its grit! A group of nudists meets once a month to have nude meals, which is totally The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie in Gothamist's book, and the meals have become very popular. Nude yoga, nude meals, what's next, nude commuting? We hope not, but if it meant a Spencer Tunick kind of world, maybe not so bad.

In the world of "girls trying to make it in the city" journalism, Gothamist has been reading Amy Sohn's Naked City column in New York magazine for a while, with a bulletproof formula of sex, personal musings, more sex, New York context, maybe a big picture idea but not necessarily. Lately, we've noticed the Post has its variation on the them in Bridget Harrison. Both seem to be positioning themselves as the 21st century's Candace Bushnell, whose Sex and the City column in the Observer launched, well, you know: The show, the attitude, the enabling of shoe obsessions, Patricia Field as fashion authority, etc.
