A fine way for the Seaport Music Festival to send off the summer, with two of the year's biggest breakout bands on a lovely evening. We were taking in both Battles and Dearhunter for the first time last Friday and were massively impressed by both bands. Deerhunter, down a man and with their usual shtick toned down, sounded like a young Sonic Youth or stripped down Broken Social Scene. A much lighter and more accessible experience that we had prepared for by listening to their thumping album. Battles was more what we expected, playing a hypnotizing hybrid of Math-Metal and some Jammy-Groove stuff that somehow works. Stereogum has some pretty pics.

Last Friday, crowds packed into Studio B to see the NYC return of laptop mashup extraordinaire Girl Talk deliver his most satisfying local set to date. 90 minutes of ADD jamz that kept the capacity crowd moving the entire time. This might sound odd, the best parts of a Girl Talk set are the mixes that don't work perfectly. They're few and far between, but sometimes two songs just don't work together. The remarkable feat is that Gillis is able to quickly realize this and seamlessly correct it right there. It's a reminder that he's not just pressing a button and letting the whole set roll, but is actually constructing these mashups on the fly. Nothing made this clearer than when after trying and failing to somehow successfully mix JT's 'My Love' with a variety of songs, finally hitting gold by matching it with the oh so timeless 'Whoop, There it is.' Ever so subtle, the trial and error made the end result that much more rewarding. The NY Times is reporting that both hipsters and blipsters like Justin TImberlake. Of course, there's been a long history of indie holding hands with MTV pop stars. We recall numerous covers of Britney Spears "Toxic", Kelly Clarkson's "Since U Been Gone" (mp3) and more recently Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy" (mp3). It's about time we all embraced JT!

THEATER: Mind the Gap specializes in bringing contemporary British plays to New York; their latest lark is a military/political thriller called The Cleric that explores the issue of state-sanctioned torture. It’s about an Irish-American priest who is caught by U.S. Special Forces in post-9/11 Afghanistan and accused of terrorist collaboration. Harmless, fraternity hazing type hi-jinks ensue, but all the priest wants is another priest to hear him confess sins that he claims are worse than anything he’s been accused of doing. Martin Denton assures us that not only is this an "important" play but that the “tension never flags.” - John Del Signore
