While some Muslim leaders boycotted Mayor Bloomberg's interfaith breakfast—noting the reports that the NYPD has been spying on Muslim communities—but one Muslim academic and activist attended...and wore a t-shirt that said, "I AM NOT A TERRORIST."
Muslim Academic Wears "I'm Not A Terrorist" To Bloomberg's Interfaith Breakfast
Video: Charlie Brown Converts To Islam In Xenophobic Peanuts Parody
Comedian Joe Mande pointed us in the direction of a new holiday-themed video comedian Denis Leary posted on his website this week. It turns Charlie Brown's Christmas Special into some sort of very uncomfortable jihadist joke. As Mande put it, "I still can’t get over how profoundly fucked up and confusing it is. That said, pleeeeeease watch."
AP Continues To Question NYPD's Muslim Spying, "Success" At Thwarting Terror Attacks
The AP has filed another piece looking at the NYPD's tactics spying on Muslim communities (Muslims who change their names, Muslim college kids), which are questionable from a civil rights perspective. Noting how Rep. Peter King has asked people to stop "smearing" the NYPD, by saying, "To date, under Commissioner Ray Kelly’s leadership, at least 14 attacks by Islamic terrorists have been prevented by the NYPD." But the AP would like to disagree!
Rep. Peter King To World: Leave The NYPD Alone!!!
Pizza tourism expert Rep. Peter King is sick and tired of everyone badmouthing and "smearing" the NYPD—especially liberal members of the House Committee on Homeland Security, who called for an investigation into the NYPD over the report that they have been spying on Muslim Americans in NYC. “This is just left-wing pandering,” King told Roll Call. “Political correctness has gone crazy on the other side. These guys go on the line every day. A thousand cops out there. For them to take those cheap shots is disgraceful.” It's like they didn't even read the Post's takedown of that report!
NYPD Spying On Muslim College Kids Now
The NYPD's controversial spying programs don't just include "sending undercover officers into ethnic and Muslim neighborhoods to act like 'a human camera' and 'map the human terrain' in mosques, hookah bars, and Internet cafes." Turns out they also involve flat out spying on college students. And students, faculty and legal experts are, understandably, furious. The multi-year police operation violates U.S. privacy laws and could jeopardize millions of dollars in federal research money and student aid.
Al Qaeda Magazine Publisher Killed By U.S. Drone Grew Up On Long Island
Last week, the U.S. drone strike in Yemen that killed U.S.-born al Qaeda leader and terrorist recruiter Anwar al-Awlaki also killed al Qaeda magazine Inspire publisher Samir Khan. Now it turns out that Khan grew up on Long Island: Newsday reports that his "classmates remember his evolution to an anti-American radical. Samir Khan, 25... was about 7 years old when he came to the United States [from Pakistan]. He lived in Westbury for about a decade, attending W.T. Clarke High School in the East Meadow school district from 1999 to 2003," before moving to Charlotte, North Carolina.
NYPD Investigates Burnt Koran Sent To Bronx Mosque
Sigh: The NYPD Hate Crimes Unit is investigating a "partially burnt Koran" that was sent to a Bronx mosque. This comes days after those opposed to building a new mosque and Islamic community center a few blocks from the World Trade Center convened for another protest.
Bloomberg To Muslim Leaders: "Shalom Alaikum!"
Malapropisms can be an endearing trait in the hands of Yogi Berra or Ringo Starr, but they generally come off as ignorant and irritating when spouting from politicians' mouths. Mayor Bloomberg made a bit of a verbal flub yesterday when he greeted Muslim leaders at a Ramadan gathering. Instead of the traditional greeting of "salaam alaikum," he uttered, "shalom alaikum."
Muslim Cabbies Demand Right To Veto Strip Club Ads
There's a holy war brewing between cab drivers and the owners of taxi medallions who lease the medallions to drivers. According to Taxi and Limousine Commission rules, whoever owns the costly medallion (they currently go for $600,000 and up!) gets to call the shots on the advertising that goes on the roof of the cab. But cabbies—especially the ones who own their vehicles but still lease their medallions—are calling on the TLC to give them veto power over ads with objectionable content, like ones for strip clubs.
Video: Presidential Shoo-In Herman Cain Thinks Americans Have Right To Ban Mosques
This morning on "Fox News Sunday", our favorite pizza magnate-turned-presidential candidate Herman Cain weighed-in on a debate over whether communities should have the right to ban Muslims from building mosques in their neighborhoods. And he used only the most airtight logic in completely misinterpreting the Constitution to argue his views: "They have a right [to ban a mosque]...That's not discriminating based upon their particular religion. There is an aspect of them building that mosque that doesn't get talked about. And the people in the community know what it is and they're talking about it." Watch him discuss the hallowed ground of Murfreesboro below:
Muslim Woman Attacked In Harlem Over Headdress Pics
Police are currently investigating whether an attack on a 56-year-old burka-wearing woman in Harlem was a hate crime. Aissatou Diallo claims that on Wednesday two women, a 28-year-old black woman and a 60-year-old white woman, attacked her on West 141st Street after she asked one to stop taking pictures of her headdress.
Glenn Beck, Muslims Agree On Bin Laden's Burial
Osama bin Laden's death may have been only the third time the New York Times actually stopped their presses, but maybe they should go for four, because Glenn Beck and many Muslims both agree that the terrorist shouldn't have been given a burial at sea. Perhaps a good bronzing would have been more appropriate?
"Intactivist" Group Trying To Nip Circumcision In The Bud
Intactivism is the belief in the right of baby boys to keep their foreskins intact, and there's a movement to legally ban circumcision. After introducing legislation last year, a San Francisco-based group of intactivists opposing male circumcision has collected enough signatures for a ballot initiative next November on whether to bar the practice in the city. "It's excruciatingly painful and permanently damaging surgery that's forced on men when they're at their weakest and most vulnerable," said Lloyd Schofield, one of the chief opponents.
Even KKK Denounces Pathetic Koran-Burning Pastor!
Based on the last time we wrote about extremist mustache enthusiast Pastor Terry Jones, you probably already have an idea how we feel about his Koran-burning shenanigans and his arrogant, unnecessarily provocative nature. Many people blamed the media, and us, for giving a radical, unsubstantial rabble-rouser any attention in the first place. So why are we writing about him again? Because even the KKK thinks he's "ignorant," "despicable" and "Un-American." And also because his gun accidentally fired as he was leaving a TV studio last night, and that's kind of funny.
Bloody Pig's Foot Mailed to Rep. Peter King Intercepted
Representative Peter King, the Long Island Republican who's been criticized for holding hearings on Muslim "radicalization," was sent a little care package via the U.S. Postal Service yesterday: a bloody pig's foot and a note with "anti-Semitic ramblings." Sources tell NBC that Capitol police are investigating, but it appears the sender mistakenly believed that King, a Roman Catholic, is Jewish. Orthodox Jews, of course, don't dig on swine, but King's religion has no such restrictions. Unfortunately, the delicious trotter was intercepted before it could get to King's office.
Facebook Sued For $1 Billion For Not Removing "Third Intifada" Page
A million dollars isn't cool, you know what's cool? Suing Facebook for a billion dollars. Facebook and founder Mark Zuckerberg are being sued for more than $1 billion over a controversial page that called for a "Third Palestinian Intifada". It's the perfect storm of Jews, Muslims, Facebook, and complicated lawsuits!
Pathetic Pastor's Shenanigans Lead To UN Workers' Deaths
Last fall, extremist mustache enthusiast Pastor Terry Jones, who really put the idiot into ideologue, did his best to stir up national attention and controversy on the heels of the "Ground Zero Mosque" debate by threatening to burn the Koran. After he placed his tail between his legs, lost the majority of his congregation, and collected a free car, we thought we'd heard the last of this silly, pretty pathetic human being. But he just couldn't let go of the media spotlight, and after a dormant period, he finally burned a copy of the Koran. And now, several UN workers are dead as a result.
11-Year-Old Boy Accused Of Hate Crime Gives Press The Finger
11-year-old Osman Daramy, a Staten Island sixth-grader who faces felony hate crime charges for assaulting a Muslim classmate, appeared in Family Court yesterday in the Bronx. Previously, the Post ran a sad photo of Daramy getting marched out of school in handcuffs and ankle shackles, and today the tabloid follows up with a photo of Daramy defiantly flipping off the tabloid's photographer. We realize Daramy—who was born in a refugee camp Sierra Leone—has his problems, but we've got to give the kid credit for giving the Post the salute it deserves.
Dad Of 6th Grader Accused of Hate Crime: He's Muslim, Too!
The father of the 11-year-old boy who was marched out of school in handcuffs (and ankle chains!) yesterday on felony hate crime charges is defending his son in the media. The sixth grader, Osman Daramy, had allegedly shoved a female classmate to the ground yesterday, punched her, kicked her, and tried to pull off her hijab while asking, "Are you a Muslim?" The assault, which left the unidentified girl with bruises and a cut lip, was allegedly the culmination of months of abuse perpetrated by Daramy, who, sources say, also cut a classmate's hair during a scissor "rampage" Monday. But his father, Frank Davis, insists the school and the cops are out to get his son.
Rep. Peter King "Convinced" That Muslim Radicalization Hearings Were A Good Idea
Yesterday, Rep. Peter King held hearings on Muslim "radicalization" in the United States. The House Homeland Security Committee Chairman has been criticized for saying Muslims Americans are not cooperating with authorities and his House colleague, Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minnesota), broke down when describing the efforts of a Muslim first responder who died on 9/11 ("Mohammed Salman Hamdani was a fellow American who gave his life for other Americans"). However, King said after the hearings, "I'm more convinced than ever that they were appropriate," and they were meant to "inform, not inflame."
Rep. Peter King Begins Muslim Radicalization Hearings, Has Police Protection
Rep. Peter King (R-Long Island), who chairs the House Homeland Security Committee, just started his controversial hearings on "Muslim radicalization" today. King promised to run a fair hearing, but he's also not afraid to play the sympathy card: King confirmed to Politico that he's under 24-hour police protection from the NYPD and Nassau County Police Department because of overseas threats.
Rep. King Promises "Fair" Muslim Hearings, Proud Of IRA Support
Rep. Peter King (R-Long Island), who heads the Homeland Security Committee, is getting ready for tomorrow's hearings on Muslim radicalization and was on CBS's The Early Show and tried to address criticism that they were racist. King promised to "run a good hearing. I will run an honest and fair hearing." But what about his support of those white guy terrorists, the IRA?
FBI Says Muslims Aren't Helpful, But FBI Is Filled With Muslims?
Recently, Long Island Rep. Peter King accused the Muslim community of being uncooperative with police and the FBI, and has planned Congressional hearings on the radicalization of Muslims in America. It turns out the FBI agrees that many Muslims are unhelpful, but says Muslims aren't the only ones who don't give them tips; the Mafia and MS-13 keep their lips sealed, too. One FBI source told the Daily News, "Criminals are criminals. It gets dicier because Muslim extremists wrap their work in religion, but the smokescreens, the silence and intimidation are similar." But some patriots say the FBI is just spreading a message of complacency, because "Muslim extremists" have already taken over the FBI!
King's Comments On Islam Countered By Times Square Rally
Rep. Peter King, chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, charged this weekend that American Muslims aren't helping in the fight against terrorism. "Certainly my dealings with the police in New York and FBI and others say they do not believe they get the same — they do not give the level of cooperation that they need," he said of American Muslims with law enforcement. King has planned Congressional hearings this week on radicalization within the Muslim community, but yesterday between 500 and 1,000 people gathered in Times Square to protest the hearings, which they say "demonize" Muslims. Speaker Russell Simmons said, “It’s our job to stand up and protect them because if they go, we’re next—blacks, Jews.”
Rally Against Muslim Hearings Today In Times Square
This afternoon, demonstrators and interfaith leaders are planning to gather in Times Square as part of "Today, I Am A Muslim Too." The rally is taking place to protest an upcoming congressional hearing on Muslims and homegrown terrorism led by LI Representative Peter King. The rally is set to begin at 2 p.m., and you can check for updates on the event at the groups twitter.
Rep. Peter King To Hold Hearings on Muslim 'Radicalization'
As soon as Republicans take control of the House, Representative Peter King, a Long Island Republican, plans to get down to business "investigating" what he sees as an increasing "radicalization" of American Muslims. In a Newsday op-ed, King swears he's not conducting a McCarthyesque witch hunt; he's just worried about domestic terrorism, and says he's not going to let "political correctness" hold him back. (As you'll recall, King hates the P.C. police almost as much as the terrorists.) In the op-ed, King blasts the leaders of his local Muslim community:
Rep. King Promises To Bring Up "Politically Incorrect Issues"
Rep. Peter King (R-LI) has already made clear his thoughts on subjects ranging from WikiLeaks ("terrorists") to Michael Jackson ("pedophile") to the "Ground Zero mosque" ("bad form") so there is little shock to see the incoming chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee had a few eyebrow-raising things to say when talking to the Observer about his new gig. Like: "Muslim leaders are not cooperating with law enforcement. [Law enforcement people] don't feel any sense of cooperation." Certainly, King's upcoming time atop the committee, which he looks at as "a legislative counterterrorism strike force," will not be lacking for interesting soundbites.
Pastor & Wannabe Koran-Burner In NYC, Still Doesn't Like Islam
The controversial Florida mustache-enthusiast who threatened to burn a bunch of Korans on Sept. 11, didn't, and then got a free car out of the deal, returned to Ground Zero yesterday a humbled man. Pastor Terry Jones was in Manhattan to announce his latest project, an organization called Stand Up America, whose aim is to foster communication and understanding for Americans about Islam in an attempt to atone for his incendiary antics last September. Or...not: the initiative actually aims to "teach about the dangers of radical Islam."
Cabbie Slasher Makes Bail, With Several Conditions
Michael Enright, the 21-year-old student charged with attacking a Muslim cab driver because of his race last month, was released on $500,000 bail yesterday. As conditions of his bail, Enright must wear an electronic monitoring device, can't leave New York State, and had to surrender his passport. He also will have an 8 p.m. curfew, has to sign up for alcohol and mental health treatments, and he's not allowed to go to any bar or club that serves alcohol. Of course, if the Post had it their way, there would be one more condition: stay away from any and all cab drivers.
Bail Set For Cabbie Slasher, Lawyers Prep Arguments
Bail was finally set at $500,000 for Michael Enright, the 21-year-old student charged with attacking a Muslim cab driver because of his race last month. It was twice as much as defense attorneys asked for, but Enright's mother said she was willing to put up her $300,000 home in Brewster, N.Y. toward bail. Even so, the judge ordered that if Enright does make bail, he must wear a monitoring bracelet and observe an 8 p.m. curfew.
