That was a great lightning show last night, wasn't it? Despite the dramatics, only JFK reported more than a few drops of rain in the city. If you missed the show there will be another chance of thunderstorms tonight. A deep layer of warm, moist air is moving up from the south and that is going to get nudged later today by a fraying cold front approaching from the west. Meteorologists like to calculate a thing called CAPE, for Convective Available Potential Energy, to see how likely it is for thunderstorms to occur. The local Weather Service says today's CAPE will be 1500-2500 J/kg, which makes the atmosphere moderately unstable. To translate, that amount of energy is roughly equivalent to the number of calories in half a stick of butter for every cubic yard of air within a couple thousand feet of the ground. That's enough to get some scattered, but intense, showers and thunderstorms brewing starting this afternoon. Today's high will be in the muggy mid 80s.
More Lightning Possible Tonight, Tomorrow, And Sunday
Sunny Weekend To Follow Friday Rains
The laziest front ever is still slowly approaching the city today, and its languid approach has allowed lots of moisture to gather in the area. The dew point is hovering around 70 degrees and the precipitable water, which is the amount of water that could be condensed from the air above our heads, is approaching two inches. With all that water it won't take much of a disturbance to get some rain falling. Look for an increasing chance of showers and thunderstorms from this afternoon until about midnight. Some of that rainfall is likely to be intense primarily because we forgot to bring an umbrella to the office. The heavy cloud cover will keep this afternoon's high to the lower 80s.
Mega Muggy Today, Dry Tomorrow
It's a coin-flipper of a forecast today. Heads and weather.com say this layer of stratus clouds lasts all day. In that case the high will reach the mid 80s and there will be a good chance of scattered showers as a cold front approaches this afternoon. If the coin lands tail up, like the Weather Service believes, the stratus clouds will burn off by early afternoon, the temperature will zip up close to 90 and there will be a good chance of heavy showers and thunderstorms later in the day. Tonight's Jets-Giants game at the new Meadowlands stadium could be a soggy affair.
Same Old Heat and Humidity
Looks like there's a week of lazy, mid-summer weather in store for the next several days. The Bermuda high is in the house. That means hazy, hot and humid conditions. Today's high in the low 90s has an outside chance of being accompanied by a late afternoon shower.
The Heat Returns
Our summer friend—hazy, hot and humid weather—is back thanks to a high pressure system that has moved out to sea. The southerly breeze means that a heat advisory is in effect for all five boroughs through tomorrow evening. We've surpassed 90 degrees for the 23rd tme this year. Number 24 is almost certainly happening tomorrow.
Weather Going From Bermuda High to Canadian Cool
Yet another warm day today. The mercury will make a valiant attempt to make this the 17th 90 degree day of July. If so it will most likely be the last such day of the month. The Bermuda High will give way to a cold front tomorrow and cooler Canadian air on Friday.
Near Record Heat for Saturday
It's all about the warm front this weekend. The attention whore discontinuity between air masses is going to scream "me me me!" through Sunday afternoon. A large shield of rain precedes the front and may skirt the city early today. More definite is that overcast skies will hold this afternoon's high to the upper 80s. There will a growing chance if a thunderstorm late this afternoon as the front draws closer.
Here We Go Again
Okay, now that we've had a couple of days off it's time for another heat wave. The weather today is going to feel mighty oppressive with highs across the city in the mid 90s and dew points in the lower 70s. Good thing cooling stations are open across the city. There's a slight chance of showers this evening as a weak cold front makes its way toward the city.
Sidewalk Cleansing Rain Arrives
Substantial rainfall is happening over the city for the first time in more than three weeks. We look forward to walking up the stairs in Morningside Park tomorrow morning without holding our nose. About an inch of has fallen over most of the city since yesterday afternoon. We can expect showers and possibly a thunderstorm through this evening. While the humidity levels are kind of disgusting today's high will be lucky to break 80 degrees.
Heat's Gone, Rain's On
The heat is gone but the humidity will be hanging on for a couple more days. Thanks to a low pressure system off the Mid-Atlantic coast there's an onshore breeze today to keep the city in soupy air. Some of that soup will splatter on the city in the form of scattered showers and thunderstorms today. Look for a high in the mid 80s.
Miserably Muggy Monday
Yuck. As mentioned earlier there is a heat advisory in effect for the city today. Hot and humid air will make for oppressive conditions outside. The muggy weather has been dragged up from the southeastern U.S. ahead of the cold front that brought tornadoes to Michigan yesterday.
Warmest Spring Ever
Combine the fourth warmest March, warmest April and tenth warmest (sort of, the Weather Service has a unique way of counting ties) May and you get the warmest spring ever recorded in Central Park. The three-month average temperature of 57.1 degrees was 4.7 degrees above normal, nearly a degree warmer than second place 1991 and nearly thirteen degrees higher than the bone-chilling spring of 1888. The first five months of 2010 have been the sixth warmest start to a year.
Sunny Last Day of May
Lots of sun and a light breeze out of the southwest have brought a warm start to Memorial Day. It's already over 80 degrees. The mercury will climb into the upper 80s in the city before the wind shifts to the east and puts a brake on the heating this afternoon.
It's Not the Hurricane, It's the Humidity
There is a cold front ready to rescue us from this week's heat and humidity melodrama. Unfortunately the front will have to wait in the wings as diva Hurricane Bill lights up the stage. Bill isn't going to make landfall in the US but it will cause dangerous rip currents this weekend. Be careful!
Hot And Humid For Rest of Week
That was one hellacious storm that blasted through the city last night. The worst hit areas were the Upper West Side and Central Park. The rain gauge at Belvedere Castle was on the edge of the storm and recorded .64 inches of rain in just a few minutes. To our semi-trained eye it looked like at least double that amount fell on 116th Street in Harlem.
Rainy End to July
If you were caught in this morning's rain and thought it was heavy wait a few hours! A warm front is slowly making it's way northward today. Showers and thunderstorms ahead of the front should arrive this afternoon and last through the evening. The expected rain is heavy enough to warrant a flash flood watch but not enough to make 2009 the wettest June-July on record! Unless three inches of rain falls, 2009 willl have to settle for second place behind 1975. Less than six inches of rain is needed by the end of August for Central Park to have its rainiest summer ever. Hip hip hooray!
Watch out for Thunderstorms
Ugh. On mornings like this, with a dew point of 74 degrees, we wish Morningside Park had a funicular. After climbing all those steps we're a big, stinky, ball of sweat. Today will remain disgusting with a dose of danger this afternoon. A host of factors: heat, extreme humidity, unstable air, an approaching cold front, etc. all point to heavy rain, and potentially severe thunderstorms this afternoon. High winds, hail, flash flooding, frequent lightning, and possibly even a tornado are not out of the question. At present it appears that the most severe weather will hit slightly north and west of the city but it is still wise to keep an eye on the sky later today.
Bermuda High Finally Asserts Itself
Humidity is the weather word of the week. The Bermuda High, which has been mostly absent this summer, will make its presence felt for the next several days. A weak Canadian high pressure system is keeping ol' Bermuda at bay today. Look for mostly sunny skies, increasing humidity, and a high in the lower 80s.
Muggy Today, Drier Tomorrow
Sometimes the weather can be aesthetically pleasing. Not just in a rainbow and fluffy cloud kind of way, but also in the way the jet stream and upper level disturbances interact with high and low pressure systems near the ground.
Summer Heat on the Way
Do you know what didn't happen between 2am Monday and early this morning? That's right, the city went 48 hours without rain! A high pressure system was able to hold the stubborn cut-off low from moving back into the area.
Midweek End to Mugginess
Cloudy and humid with a chance of afternoon showers continues to be the local weather story this week. Today will have a near normal high of 82, while tomorrow and Wednesday will be warmer. Tuesday should top out in the upper 80s and Wednesday may reach the low 90s.
More Thunderstormy Goodness
Will somebody please pick up the needle? If you'll excuse the nearly dead metaphor, the skipping record that the weather has become will continue through tomorrow. Today and tomorrow should be hazy, warm and humid with a chance of showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening. Like over the weekend some of those showers could contain heavy downpours -there's lots of water that could be wrung out of the air. Tomorrow might turn out to be a degree or two cooler as a weak and dissipating cold front moves through town.
Sticky Summer Weekend
This week's weather forecasts haven't been too accurate, but we'll try again. It now appears that the weekend will be hazy, hot and humid with a chance of showers or thunderstorms each day through Sunday. Showers are already popping up around the metro area this morning. Later in the day those showers may contain heavy downpours. This afternoon's high will be in the sticky upper 80s.
Muggy Monday
There is no meteorological definition for thick air but Gothamist thinks today would qualify. So far it has been a cloudy, foggy, misty, muggy and rainy day. Throw in a shower or thunderstorm this afternoon and we've got a summer soup! The thunderstorms could be severe. Hail, damaging winds, heavy rain and frequent lightning are possible through about 10 p.m. or so. A flash flood watch is in effect for areas north and west of the city. Today's high will be in the low 80s.
Take an Early Lunch Weather
Mother Nature may throw a little temper tantrum this afternoon, so you may want to take an early lunch or have it delivered. A warm front moving north through the city this morning will bring lots of humid, unstable air to the region. A trough of low pressure is expected to follow around 1 p.m. This disturbance will kick off showers and thunderstorms. The storms may contain strong, damaging winds, large hail, and rain of the intense downpour variety. It would not surprise Gothamist if a severe thunderstorm watch were posted later today. The high today will be a very soggy 80 degrees. An approaching cold front tonight will extend the chance of showers and thunderstorms until well after midnight.
