Bronx Man Charged For Beating Man To Death In $15 Robbery

Police have charged a suspect in the fatal beating of a 59-year-old Bronx father who was mugged for $15. Devon Downs, 29, was charged with second-degree murder and robbery in the death of former cab driver Bimal Chanda last fall. An accomplice who also joined in on beating Chanda with a metal object has not been caught yet. “The family is really happy to hear about the arrest, they never thought this day would come,” said Chanda family friend and spokesman Mohammed Ali. “Detectives told us it was a really hard case and that it was hard to identify the suspects.” more ›

According to the Post, "The man, described as in his 30s and dressed up in a tuxedo, had lost his glasses and “couldn’t see properly,” according to one cop at the scene. Video: Fatal $15 Mugging Victim's Family Call Attack Hate Crime

The family of the Bronx man who was mugged and beaten over the weekend for $15, and died a few days later of his injuries, claim the attack may have been a hate crime. Family members and neighbors gathered last night outside the funeral home where services for 59-year-old Bimal Chanda, who was Bengali, were held. While police say there's no indication of a hate crime, Chanda's widow believes there had to be a different motive, since the two muggers brutally beat him, yet left his wallet filled with credit cards and $90 in cash, only taking $15 from his pocket: "I've been hearing things, from other family, friends and relatives, other Bengali people, they've been getting mugged on a daily basis, and it's really not acceptable," one family member told NBC. more ›

Last month 75-year-old Linda Naimo and her husband Joseph locked up their shop of 40 years, 3J's Variety Store on Victory Boulevard, after celebrating his 81st birthday in there with family. As they were heading into their apartment upstairs a man and woman forced their way into the vestibule and pummeled them to the ground, demanding money. Around 7:30 p.m. on Thanksgiving, three thugs jumped Hasidic teacher Joel Weinberger as he left a yeshiva on Harrison Avenue in Williamsburg. The beating left him hospitalized for four days with his jaw wired shut and a broken leg. His assailants, who stole his cell phone, tore his clothing, destroyed religious paraphernalia, and yelled, "We hate you" before leaving Weinberger lying on the sidewalk "basically undressed on the scene," according to local activist Isaac Abraham. They say the victim was struck by a northbound E train. He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. It was not immediately known how he wound up on the tracks." The police released a surveillance video still of a man who mugged two women at Manhattan bank ATMs. According to WCBS 2, "Police said the first robbery took place on Sept. 3 around 1 p.m. at a Citibank location in Columbus Circle, then again, a week later, at a Chase ATM on West 23rd Street at mid-morning." In both cases, the suspect approached the women from behind, simulated having a gun and demanded their money. Neither victim was injured.
