Subway Robberies Up, Murders Down, CSI Actor Mugged

According to NYPD statistics, overall subway crime dropped by 3% in 2008, with murders down to two from four in 2007. There were an average 6.3 major felonies a day last year, compared with 7.4 in 2006 (there was an average of 17 in 1997). But robberies are on the rise: 823 occurred last year, up from 796 in '07. And there were three rapes reported last year, as opposed to just one in '07. Still, the NYPD's John Hall tells the Post crime is "so low that it's getting more and more difficult to keep it there," and attributes the stats to a crackdown on people walking between moving cars, which criminals do when trolling for victims.

A sommelier at French restaurant La Grenouille is lucky he didn’t get his eye shot out by a trio of BB gun wielding muggers on the Upper East Side. The Post reports that 34-year-old Eric Delcros was walking on East 81st Street and York Avenue around 12:45 a.m. on June 2nd [it was actually July 2nd] when three teens pointed their pellet guns at the professional oenophile and relieved him of his iPhone, wallet and $160. Delcros tells the Post, "I don't say nothing, ever. You don't want to provoke them." Cops later rounded up two of the li'l gangstas on robbery charges.

A gang of five trailed a pair of off-duty cops in Washington Heights around midnight last night and jumped them in an attempted robbery that did not go well. Things went sideways for the assailants almost immediately when one of them initiated the attack by picking up a wooden folding chair from the trash and hitting one of the officers on the back of the head with it.

A 24-year-old Columbia University student studying late at the library Friday evening is in critical condition at St. Luke's Hospital in Manhattan after his bid to escape a pair of muggers ended in serious injury under the wheels of a Jeep. According to WABC News, the student had just left the library on Columbia's Morningside Heights campus and was waiting for a bus around 9 p.m., when he was approached by two young men. It's unclear whether the student was mugged or already mugged, when he fled into the street near 120th and Broadway.

Three female cab drivers were on a group cell phone call with a fourth female cab driver when they heard her being choked by a mugger on 28th St. and Ninth Ave. So they called 911 and raced to the scene, coming to their friend's aid and simultaneously forming what was probably the largest number of female cab drivers ever assembled in one place; over 99% of New York City cab drivers are men.
