John Norris, MTV Personality

If you've had basic cable access over the past few decades, you know the voice and face of John Norris. The MTV News anchor has been a staple at the network--delivering up-to-the-minute music news, interviewing every bold-faced name in the book, and even helping to bring politics into the mix (Choose or Lose, anyone?). Being one of the only familiar faces left there, rumors of his lay-off from MTV served as another death rattle for the network, maybe even the final nail in the coffin. Norris has continued to keep up with the music scene, and has often been spotted at McCarren Pool, Todd P shows, and talking to the up-and-comers of a new generation of music. This week he told us a little bit about what his life has been like up to now.

. The NBC Nightly News actually had "breaking news" about the decision, and here's the statement from NBC News president Steve Capus:

Effective immediately, MSNBC will no longer simulcast the "Imus in the Morning" radio program. This decision comes as a result of an ongoing review process, which initially included the announcement of a suspension. It also takes into account many conversations with our own employees. What matters to us most is that the men and women of NBC Universal have confidence in the values we have set for this company. This is the only decision that makes that possible. Once again, we apologize to the women of the Rutgers basketball team and to our viewers. We deeply regret the pain this incident has caused.
TVNewser has the internal memo to NBC staffers:
"Over the course of the last week many of you have reached out to me and expressed your strong viewpoints on the Don Imus situation. I've had countless conversations, e-mail exchanges and phone calls with people throughout this company. I've heard you loud and clear. Therefore, we are announcing tonight that MSNBC will no longer simulcast the Imus radio program...

Bryan Bruchman, of New York band Man in Gray, and his girlfriend Mary, have started a site to pay homage to all of those ruined songs in life. You know how often a song will stick itself to a situation, an event, a memory...making music a sonic earmark, and the first few notes of a song leading you on an unwanted trip down memory lane.

Singer-songwriter Elliott Smith died yesterday of an apparent suicide. He was found in his Silver Lake, CA apartment and brought to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead an hour later. According to MTV News, there was a single knife wound that seemed to be self-inflicted but police are investigating. This is very sad to hear about this death because his songs, depressing and dark countered with his soft voice and lyrical guitar playing, have made our days much sweeter.

Gothamist guesses we need to report this bit of Lower East Side news, as Lockhart Steele is on vacation. As part of MTV's week of celebrating the MTV Video Music Awards, there's a $8.28 dinner entree promotion through tomorrow night at Lower East Side restaurants, including Essex, Punch & Judy, and AKA Cafe, are participating.
