Celebrate Mother's Day With Exclusive M Train Service

Celebrate Mother's Day With Exclusive M Train Service

Hopefully by now you've already gotten a chance to have brunch with your mom (or whatever motherly figure you have in your life), or call and thank her for putting up with you and all the dumb, unseemly things you do. It seems someone has decided to celebrate by putting stickers reading "Reserved for mothers today" all over the M Train, then taking photos of happy families on this Tumblr. And that's only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Mother's Day tributes. more ›

New LIC Court Square Subway Station Connects 7 To G, E, M Trains

Subway riders: Here, at long last, is your new Court Square Subway Station Complex! Until now, those who wanted to transfer between the 7 line and the G, E, and M lines in Long Island City were reduced to vulgarly venturing out onto the street. That's right, the street! Now you'll be able to do it all without once leaving the warm bosom of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. more ›

MTA Will Remove Crew Of Open-Door M Train

MTA Will Remove Crew Of Open-Door M Train

On Monday passengers on an M train pulling into the Marcy Avenue station got a scare when one of the car doors opened even though it wasn't in the station. MTA spokesman Kevin Ortiz told us, "This is a serious incident and we are investigating. We are also in the process of identifying the train crew involved," and apparently they've identified them. NY1 reports that the MTA has found the crew and they will all be removed from service. more ›

M Train Doors Open Before Train Hits Station

M Train Doors Open Before Train Hits Station

Yesterday passengers were lucky not to fall from the M train's elevated tracks in Brooklyn, as one of the subway's doors opened before the train had fully pulled into the Marcy Avenue station. NY1 reports that yesterday evening one train never fully pulled into the station, but the doors opened and some passengers attempted to get off. Witness Maryanne Lebron said, "They were rushing off and thank God the first passenger that was getting off was able to realize before falling down that there was no platform so he held on and the three people behind him pretty much stopped short, which kind of like saved their lives." Where have we seen this before? more ›

Extreme Makeovers For Worst Subway Stations

Extreme Makeovers For Worst Subway Stations

Way back in 2009 the MTA released a list of the worst subway stations after assessing conditions across the city; coming in at #1 was the Seneca Avenue (M line) station in Ridgewood, Queens. At the time, the agency promised that 25 of the stations would get major overhauls sometime over the next 5 years. Well, now that number is up to 29, and allegedly work will start at some stops this year. more ›

Why the New M Train Is Snubbing 2nd Avenue

Why the New M Train Is Snubbing 2nd Avenue

A frustrated Gothamist commenter wants to know why the new M line isn't stopping at 2nd Avenue, particularly because "that station is always packed and now there's going to be even LESS service. Brutal." So we asked NYC Transit about the quirk, and a spokesman tells us, "If you look at the new map, you'll see the Chrystie St cut the M is taking to meet up with the 6th Ave corridor at Broadway/Lafayette. There's no other way for it to diverge from the Broadway Line (J,M,Z) corridor to merge with the 6th Ave (B,D,F—and now M) Line corridor. That, in a roundabout way, is why the M can't stop @ 2nd Ave." And that's one to grow on. Still sucks for the East Village, but at least it's not inexplicably brutal. more ›

MTA Board Approves Widespread Service Cuts

MTA Board Approves Widespread Service Cuts

This shouldn't come as much of a surprise. The MTA board voted 11-2 to approve far-reaching service cuts that will eliminate the W and V trains and cut more than 30 bus lines in an attempt to plug a revenue shortfall of $750 million. Despite some alterations to the planned cuts drafted after a series of contentious public hearings, the service reductions closely mirror those proposed last year. more ›

MTA to Cut V Line; Spare Some Bus Lines

MTA to Cut V Line; Spare Some Bus Lines

The MTA agreed last night to save 11 previously-condemned bus lines, but the orange V train (est. 2001) was not so lucky. In January the authority hinted that it would create an M/V “mash-up”; now that’s coming into focus with the older M taking over the V train’s orange branding and its stops to Forest Hills-71st Avenue in Queens (the V's lower Manhattan and South Brooklyn service will be eliminated). Look at a map here. Sounds confusing, but the MTA says it's how commuters feel that’s important. Indeed, last year Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz held a mock funeral for the beloved brown train. “People were more comfortable with the M designation, being an older and more historic train designation than the V,” said Charles Seaton, a spokesman for New York City Transit. more ›

Advertising Agency Owes Cash-Strapped MTA $18 Million

Advertising Agency Owes Cash-Strapped MTA $18 Million

In order to avoid far-reaching subway cuts that would eliminate the M and W lines and cause trains to become less frequent and more crowded, the MTA needs about $18 million—the same amount a deadbeat advertising company owes the transit agency. An MTA audit revealed that Titan Outdoor Holdings has come up short on its monthly payments for almost a year, but the MTA is afraid that recouping the money might bankrupt the company, causing the agency to net even less revenue. more ›

Transit Cuts, Fare Hike Are as Severe as Expected

Transit Cuts, Fare Hike Are as Severe as Expected

After much speculation and the local papers preparing commuters for what was to come, the MTA made their official budget proposal today and as expected, the cutbacks were dramatic. In addition to the slashing of the W and the Z lines among other cuts listed Tuesday, today's 2009 budget also included the following: more ›

Riders May Lose W Train Among Big MTA Cuts

Riders May Lose W Train Among Big MTA Cuts

With the MTA's budget deficit now being projected at 1.2 billion (after an original prognosis of 900 million), the Daily News has learned that a report to be released Thursday will include what some are calling "Doomsday" cuts. The big one for many commuters is the elimination of the W line. more ›

PATH Train Shudders, M Train Derails, Pervs on the 5

PATH Train Shudders, M Train Derails, Pervs on the 5

Passengers on a PATH train from Newark to the World Trade Center station had a shaky ride this afternoon. The train started to shudder from side to side, causing a motorman to stop the train. WNBC reports that at least 30 people were injured, with "as many as 10 passengers...taken off the train on backboards." Hours earlier, a train on the M line derailed at Chambers Street. There were no passengers, just transit workers, and... more ›
