Fast Bus-Only Lanes Headed To 1st And 2nd Avenues

The MTA is considering rolling out bus-only lanes on First and Second avenues that the agency says might shorten commutes between Houston Street and 125th Street. The "East Side speedway" could be laid down by September 2010, and the agency is planning to stock up on "dozens of super-stretch buses for the new service," the Daily News reports.

Pedestrian Killed in Hell's Kitchen Bus Collision

An out-of-service city bus hit and killed a 23-year-old who was trying to cross Ninth Avenue this morning. The victim, a Westchester resident, had been trying to dash across the avenue near the corner of West 53rd Street at 8:44 am when he was struck by a bus making a left turn, according to the Daily News.

Ring The (Bus) Bell (Cord)

Now that there won't be major service changes to the MTA buses, now we can revel in a cute part of the bus experience: The bell cord, that somewhat slack length of cable that passengers pulled to alert drivers of their stops. Times dynasty scion A.G. Sulzberger writes on CityRoom, "Without fanfare, New York City Transit has installed the bell cord in all new buses, including 270 already in service in every borough, with an additional 580 hitting the streets over the next year. Eventually, the whole fleet will be outfitted with the cord." Why bring it back? Because it's cheaper and easier to repair! And a veteran bus driver added, even though the last bell cord was taken out in 1992 to make way for the tape buttons, "People still search for the cords. To this day, people will come up to me and say, ‘I can’t find the bell.’"

Bus Accident in Borough Park

WCBS 2 reports that "10 people have been injured—one seriously—in an accident involving a New York City bus in Brooklyn." The accident occurred at 49th Street and 14th Avenue before 7 a.m.; it's unclear what caused the incident. The injured, most of whom had cuts and bruises, were taken to the hospital for evaluation. In other bus news, a private bus on its way to D.C. for the inauguration broke down on a highway in Mamaroneck around 1 a.m.; the passengers were stranded there for six hours as the driver tried unsuccessfully to fix it.

We received an alert saying an MTA bus set off a radiation detector on lower Broadway, in the Financial District. The bus and its passengers were held outside 25 Broadway for further inspection. What could it be, besides potential for the worst commute ever? Well, the request for emergency services was canceled when it was discovered one of the passengers had an implanted pacemaker--some pacemakers do use radioactive material. Phew!

An M22 bus traveling on Madison Street apparently fatally struck a pedestrian. The woman, identified as Lourdes Fernandez, had gone to the grocery and may have lost her balance near Jackson Street. The bus driver apparently didn't even realize he/she hit someone while making the left turn onto Jackson.

Early yesterday morning, a 1992 Thunderbird crashed into an MTA bus on Hillside Avenue in Queens, killing the car's two occupants. Christopher Boyd, the driver, and passenger Eric Richmond were pronounced dead at the scene. The bus driver and one of the passenger suffered minor injuries.
