May 3: Cheezapolooza III: Naked vs Cooked

KARAOKE: Tonight is the MCFGHT, a LVHRD event. Michelle Collins is the master of ceremonies, presiding over a roomful of people cheering on those who take part in the nights karaoke showdown. If you've never seen Brian Battjer do karaoke, and we're guessing most of you haven't, you do not want to miss this. He'll be one of the contestants tonight. Check out the flyer here, and buy tickets here. They're $20 ($11 if you're special), but include complimentary drinks from Sapporo Beer, Pravda Vodka, and Hi Ball Energy Drink. So if you're tonedeaf and like the juice, this may just be the event for you.

We hear about a lot of events each week and we can't write one post about each of them, because then you'd be here all day. So we're going to sift through and pick out some gems for the weekdays, here are some of the highlights for this week...

Gothamist's early memories of egg custard include eating them at dim sum or at a pastry stores like Maria's, but we recently experienced something totally different. After seeing David Yee's photo of the Egg Custard King Cafe on flickr we knew that we had to have at least one egg custard. What we didn't know and probably shouldn't have done was that we would end up eating four in a sitting. The things we do for you, our readers.

Myriad sake bottles line the windowsills of Chibi's Sake Bar, a candle-lit Soho nook offering 18 varieties of sake served hot or cold. Named after the Dutch-Japanese husband-wife owners' bulldog, Chibi, the bar also serves edamame, mushroom dumplings, caviar, and grilled tofu to nibble on as the sake disappears and evening turns to night. Those with bigger appetites can stroll next door to the adjoining restaurant, The Kitchen Club, where a Japanese inspired menu offers specialties such as tofu and chrysanthemum dumplings, yellowfin tuna and wasabi cream, and a king salmon salad with pickled ginger and orange.

The brawny Pastore allegedly punched fiancée Lisa Regina — who formerly played a bit part on the gangland show — as they drove through SoHo during the start of a trip to see the woman's family in New Jersey, said Regina's lawyer Jeff Schwartz. The TV leg-breaker allegedly became enraged and accused the 44-year-old woman of delaying the start of their journey by being late...He began beating Regina in the car and smashed her head against the dashboard...He then stopped his SUV in front of 284 Mott St., dragged her out of the vehicle by her hair and slammed her to the ground, where she injured her tailbone, Schwartz said.

Gothamist is happy to see that organizations like IndieMusicForLife.org are out there bringing together independent singer-songwriters to help in the common cause of finding a cure for cancer. The money is raised through donations, live shows and from artists donating songs for compilation CD’s which are sold. Many have joined forces with this organization to help set up and perform at fund raising events all over the country, helping to raise awareness and money for various cancer research centers. This month there are several events in NYC, details below:
