Yesterday 26-year-old Bronx resident Edgar Algarin was charged with murdering the 3-year-old daughter of his girlfriend while she was away in Atlanta for work. Police say the mom, Antonia Ortiz, left the girl, Enidaliz, and her 5-year-old brother, Manuel, in the care of her live-in boyfriend, even though the Administration for Children's Services [ACS] had an open case with the family after school officials discovered Manuel with an injury to his eye earlier this month. The Wall Street Journal reports that ACS was also investigating whether the boy had been a victim of malnourishment.

A 29-year-old woman walking with her 2-year-old on Park Avenue between 178th and 179th Streets in the Bronx was shot in the face around 10:30 p.m. last night. Claudia Millan was pronounced dead at St. Barnabas Hospital. Her neighbor Michael Escobar told the Daily News he ran outside and pulled little Jamir from his mother's body, "He was down on his knees trying to hold her. She was bleeding out of her head. I tried to stop it. I just couldn't."
Couple Who Beat Bronx Man To Death Were Allegedly Beating Each Other
The allegedly drunk couple who have been charged with the beating and killing of 61-year-old Quinton Guerrero in the Bronx over the weekend had been violently fighting themselves beforehand, says Queen Smith, mother of accused killer Tosheba Alford. Smith says Alford called her from the back of the cab when boyfriend Kendall Major began to hit her and accused her of having an incestuous relationship with her brother. Alford then jumped out of the cab to escape a beating from Major, and Guerrero had rushed to her aid. Major then began beating Guerrero as Alford tried to stop him. However, witnesses tell a different story.
Drunk Couple Allegedly Beat 61-Year-Old Bronx Man To Death
A couple allegedly beat and killed an older man in the Bronx early this morning after a drunken altercation. Quinton Guerrero, 61, was attacked around 1:30 a.m. today in front of his home at 480 East 138th Street by a couple who fled the scene. "I heard fighting and then I heard a loud thump like someone fell on the floor. I looked out the window and saw someone on the ground unconscious face up," Oscar Porrata, one of Guerrero's neighbors, told the News.
Cops Conduct "Nutcracker" Busts, Nab Bronx Sellers
Authorities busted Bronx bodegas for selling "nutcracker"—a sweet cocktail illegally sold to underage drinkers at delis, convenience stores and barbershops across the city. Cops arrested two bodega employees and the state suspended the beer licenses at two Mott Haven delis after an under-aged, undercover auxiliary cop was able to purchase the homemade drinks. "This is so outrageous, we are going to seek revocation," said State Liquor Authority Deputy Chief Executive Officer Michael Jones.
Bronx Neighborhoods Have The Nation's Highest Hunger Rate
This is just sad. The Bronx neighborhoods of Morrisania, Mott Haven and Bedford Park have a larger percentage of households suffering from hunger than any other urban area in the nation, according to a new study [PDF]. Researchers also determined that a swath of Brooklyn consisting of Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brownsville, Canarsie and East New York has the country's sixth highest rate of hunger.

You got to hand it to kids — they always find interesting ways to get bent. New York City teens are apparently buying a sugary concoction of fruit punch mixed with vodka, white rum, or tequila called "Nutcracker." The sweet drinks and their frozen counterpart, "Nemo," are sold for $5 or $10 per Styrofoam cup at bodegas and barbershops, and according to the Daily News, they are quite popular among young folks. "They are poppin'. They get you sauced," said Shaquel, a 15-year-old who declined to give his last name. "Kids like them. You don't need ID to get them. It is like your first step toward drinking liquor."
Bronx Mom Killed In Afternoon Shootout
Yesterday afternoon at around 3:30 p.m., a woman—who was trying to shield her 9-year-old child at the time— was fatally shot in violent crossfire on East 146th Street in the Bronx's Mott Haven neighborhood. According to MyFox NY, "Aisha Santiago, 25, was just coming home from doing laundry when someone opened fire on East 146th Street," and some witnesses think that the gunfire was from rival gangs, possibly the Bloods and Crips based on the groups' colors, while police suspect it might be the Latin Kings and another gang.
Police Fatally Shoot Bronx Man Who Opened Fire on Them
Cops in the Bronx fatally shot a man who had opened fire on them in the wee hours of yesterday morning. 31-year-old Oswaldo Sevilla had just gone out for a soda according to his roommate when police began receiving reports from neighbors in Longview that he had been firing a gun while walking on Southern Boulevard around 2:30 a.m. Two officers approached Sevilla while a crowd was gathered and he began walking away from them, clearly brandishing a weapon. As cops told him to drop it, Sevilla fired at them. They ducked behind a van just as two more officers were arriving on the scene. Both teams of officers shot back at Sevilla; witnesses claimed to hear over 30 shots total. As the cops undergo a routine inquiry by an internal shooting review board, one police source told the News, "This is as clean as it gets." Sevilla was a construction worker in Mott Haven who emigrated from Mexico as a teenager. A friend of his told the Times, “Something must have happened to him. That doesn’t sound like the man I know.”
'Online Buddy' Stabbing Suspect Admits Confronting Victim
The man accused of the stabbing murder of a Bronx woman he was AIM chat buddies with admitted to having an altercation with victim Nizmay Aponte and her friend, but stopped short of offering a full confession. After taking a swing at the friend, suspected killer Raymond Dennis told police, "I got into a fight with Nimzay. I smacked her on her ass and told her to stop lying to me. I said, 'That's what you get for playing with my emotions.'" Dennis was known online as "Mike" and was tracked down after Aponte whispered on her deathbed, "MIke did it." The News reports that he has a violent history with women, once having an order of protection taken out against by an ex-wife he had threatened he would "take off this earth" and pleaded guilty last year to hitting a woman in the face so hard she spat blood. Dennis told police that he drank two beers and smoked a blunt before going to the Mott Haven park where the murder took place and did not remember having a knife on him when he returned home.

On Tuesday around 12:30 p.m., a young woman was fatally stabbed in St. Mary's Park in the Bronx. It turns out that Nimzay Aponte, 23, managed to tell the police as she was dying that "Mike did it"—referring to the screenname of her killer. Police arrested Raymond Dennis yesterday and charged him with murder, illegal weapons possession and assault.
Bronx Cab Accident Leaves Driver Dead, Young Girl Critical
A livery cab driver in the Bronx is dead after an accident that saw him lose control of the vehicle and crash into a minivan with three people inside it. 51-year-old Gregorio Primentel was speeding in his cab across Bruckner Boulevard in Mott Haven when he crossed over the median and hit the van, which carried two adults and one child. The six-year-old girl in the backseat is critical and the two adults in serious condition. Firefighters needed to cut off the roof of the van in order to get the people out. A witness told NY1, "When I reach into the car, the driver was in the back seat facing down, I try to speak to the guy, he was bleeding from his head...Then I went to the van and see three people in the minivan, a little child...she was in the back seat, thank God she was wearing a seat belt, she was in a car seat."

Children Shot in Two Separate Incidents
Last night, two children were shot in two different incidents in the Mott Haven area of the Bronx. First, a 13 year old was shot in the leg yesterday afternoon while he was outside MS 220 on Brook Avenue; police think his shooter was aiming for someone else. Then around 7:30PM, a 10 year old girl was also hit in the leg while she was playing outside, and she was caught in the crossfire of some arguing men. The two children were both brought to Lincoln Hospital, where they are recovering. Is it too much to hope that the city can do more to stop the illegal gun trade, as the Mayor tries to encourage gun control laws?
