Man Jumps Off Bridge In Failed Attempt To Escape Cop

A motorcyclist caught driving with a suspended license at the Bronx-side entrance to the Throgs Neck Bridge decided to jump rather than face arrest yesterday. Rocky Sanchez, 43, has had his license suspended 17 times, and when MTA Bridges and Tunnels Officer Charles Luce pulled him over by the toll plaza, Sanchez wasn't about to go down without a fight. First he sped away from Luce, then abandoned his motorcycle, ran across six lanes of traffic, climbed over the wall and jumped about 30 feet!

The accident occurred at the corner of Greene Avenue and Washington Avenue in Fort Greene. The rapper Common's cousin, Ajile Turner, allegedly hit cyclist Julian C. Miller with his Kawasaki, and both were pronounced DOA at Brooklyn Hospital.

Futuristic Car Lands in NYC

While aliens are being spotted in New Jersey, there have been some out-of-this-world car sightings right in downtown New York recently. The NY Post reports on the mysterious Jeston-like car that many pedestrians have been intrigued by, but it turns out it's only making a rare East Coast appearance. The Aptera 2e, a 1700-lb, 3-wheeled electric car set to hit the market later this year (here's a video showing it in action), will only be sold in California at first. It's classified as a motorcycle, but if you have the $25-40K to hand over for one, you won't need the proper license because it operates like an automobile (even containing a trunk and airbags). The car can drive on both city streets and highways, and one Wired writer just sat shotgun for a ride, saying of his driver, "he suddenly gunned it at a green light, turned right on a dime, faded three lanes to his left while outrunning a cab turning left from the opposing lane and came to a comfortable stop perhaps 50 yards later." The car 200 miles per gallon, meaning you could drive 100 miles for less than it would cost to take one trip on the subway.

Drunk Driver Kills Motorcyclist in Greenpoint

A 21-year-old man riding his motorcycle was killed by a driver in Brooklyn around 1:30 a.m. on Sunday. Brian Sitarevich, who was riding with other friends, was on Humboldt Street when he was hit by Daniel Levens's SUV; Levens had tried to make a left turn onto Greenpoint Avenue. Levens, of Massapequa, was charged with drunk driving and the Brooklyn DA's office is investigating whether to press more charges. Sitarevich's father wouldn't blame Levens yet, "I can't point the finger at someone that might be innocent," but added, "There is a hole in your heart and I hope one day it will close. I keep looking at the door and hoping he is going to walk through the door for dinner or something."

In a well-coordinated publicity stunt, the first cases of Georges Duboeuf 2008 Beaujolais Nouveau arrived in New York City yesterday via Harley-Davidson motorcade, with Franck Duboeuf (Georges Duboeuf’s son) holding it triumphantly aloft from a motorcycle sidecar. According to the Times, some 20 chefs, including David Bouley and Francois Payard, sommeliers, and a posse of Harley-Davidson Hog Club members chaperoned the wine from Battery Park to David Bouley’s new restaurant Secession, where lunch was served.

A reader sent us the above photos, taken around 3 p.m. today on Spring Street near Varick. As you can see, someone lost a motorcycle today. No one was harmed, the fire was put out and here's to hoping the owner had insurance. Read more at The Abbeville blog.

Police believe two members of the Crips killed an off-duty corrections officer yesterday morning in order to steal his motorcycle. Kenneth Duncan, who had worked for the city's correction department for 17 years, was found shot in the head outside his Remsen Village home.
