Make no mistake about it: we're at war with the mosquitoes this summer. It's so bad that some people in Rockaway are actually hoping they carry West Nile so they can get the city to come spray. (So far, the virus has only been detected in mosquitoes on Staten Island.) Enter: the Hartford Courant. They're here to tell you all about what will and won't work in preventing mosquitoes from eating you alive this summer, and they have terrible, terrible news. First of all: nothing really works. West Nile Virus Has Been Found On Staten Island
The first case of West Nile has been declared, not in Rockaway, but on Staten Island. First came the media, and now the mosquitos! Rockaway is making headlines again as a flock of the winged vampires has descended upon the once peaceful beachside neighborhood. According to the Daily News, "just a few short miles from the beaches, playgrounds sit empty and patio furniture is off-limits as summer has been hijacked by swarms of mosquitoes." That's so Bart's People!
NYC Sees First West Nile Case Of Season
In July the Department of Health had already detected West Nile virus in city mosquitoes in three of the boroughs: Staten Island, Queens and Brooklyn. Now they're reporting the first human case of the virus for the season has occurred in the Bronx; a 61-year-old man was hospitalized with meningitis (the 199th West Nile case in a New Yorker since 1999).
