Old friends of Gothamist, (they played our Movable Hype 1.5 show way back when!), Morning Theft is still chugging through the New York scene playing their inspired brand of Pixies-meets-Nirvana rock. They've recently entered the Emergenza Festival...a national battle of the bands of sorts. This Friday at the Knitting Factory, they will be playing in the semis for a chance to advance to the finals at Webster Hall. They'll be on at 8:00 sharp. Come out and show your support!

“Scary” Music by Ensemble Pamplemousse (who we interviewed last year) on Mischief Night!

MUSIC: Tonight at Crash Mansion there's a free show and a free open bar...and for a good cause. Morning Theft, The Cloud Room, My Victoria, and The Rats will all perform for a second part of a benefit for Kia Nowotne. As an added bonus we hear our favorite artist, Michelle McShane, will be joining the Cloud Room for a few songs, playing autoharp.

This Thursday many bands will come together for The Gift of Noise Benefit that has been organized to help Kia Nowotne.

Friday the 13th stopped being scary for us when we were younger, rebellious and declaring things like "13, in fact, is our lucky number". We embraced the superstition and turned it in to our lucky day. Or, as it turns out, just another day. Anyway, we were hoping that some theater in this city would be showing Friday the 13th: Jason Takes Manhattan, but no such...luck. You'll have to deal with these other non-scary events:

Luckily for us, New York didn't feel too far away as we bumped into a few of our favorite downtown bands. The Cloud Room, Asobi Seksu and Morning Theft were all there enjoying the festivities. We had a chance to catch The Cloud Room yesterday at the Fader/Levi's party and will be telling you all about it after our nap. For now, check out photos here of our time in Austin thus far.

Today is a red letter day in the emerging field of, um, digital secret keeping date-related cool free stuff. If you're a fan of Wilco, then please, read on. If you're not, either become one like a good little music fan or skip the next paragraph.

We want to see you all at Pianos tonight for the next Movable Hype show. That's right...TONIGHT. We have some great bands, a deejay (DJ Cliche/Eric from Maxim and Black Table), oh and free drinks. The free drinks won't last forever, so get there early and stay until that last note is done resonating in the air. You're young, you can do it.

- And the catchphrase of 2005: "Is this because I'm a lesbian?"

Now that those pesky holidays are over with we can get back to our regularly scheduled agenda. First up for Gothamist this year is the next installment of Movable Hype. This one is on January 17th at Pianos.

So it's almost time to go home for the holidays, and you as a New Yorker have to bring the best presents. You know that right? The rest of your non-New Yorker friends and family look to you for your urban hipness, don't let them down.

Still haven't ironed out your New Years Eve plans yet? It's okay, we think that holiday is over-rated anyway. We suggest you gather some good friends, resolve in '05 to buy tickets before they sell out and get over to one or more of the following shows:

Morning Theft, fresh off the bus from Boston in 2003, have been desribed as Pearl Jam meets Travis, Nirvana meets the Cure, the Pixies meets Radiohead...you get the point. But these guys have their own sound. And it sounds good. They're the band who has been (not so) silently brooding in the corner of the indie rock scene. They're loud. They're catchy. They're pensive mood rock. Gothamist (and pretty much everyone below 14th St) loves Morning Theft, you should too. Go check them out for free at Luna Lounge tomorrow night. More details after the interview...

Frankly, this is not the best stretch for live music NYC has ever seen. Randall's Island is using the weekend between last weekend's Curiosa Festival and next weekend's garage rock blowout to host the Warped Tour...but Coolfer won't recommend an all-ages punk show to Gothamist readers. There seems to be a slight lull. Maybe everybody is heading out for a long weekend at their summer homes? Hard to say. It's okay I guess. Here's what strikes me as the best of this week's events:
