Mo's to Close

Mo's to Close

Earlier this month the NY Post reported that Mo Pitkin's House of Satisfaction might be closing, which was met with a letter from the owners saying the Post "as usual, mixed fact with fiction." Last night a reader sent over the following letter, written by the same folks, which was sent to performers of the space:

We're sorry to say, but Mo Pitkin's will be closing on October 20th, 2007, with a closing night party/performance on October 21st at 8pm. Building our bi-level performance space was an enormous undertaking, done with a lot of love, but it created a debt load that the club just could not sustain. Our deepest apologies to all those with gigs subsequent to that; with the recent press articles about our "imminent" closing, it's just become impossible for us to continue to stay open.
That's right, come next month there will be no more Satisfaction (at least not in the form of a deep-fried mac & cheese)! The letter goes on to say they aren't sure who will take the building over, but we're hoping it will still host a variety of events -- and last a little longer than two years. We'd have to agree that with the duplex apartment complete with patio on top of the space, it's quite a steal for only $5.9M. more ›

THEATER: The Sisyphean life of an “emerging” playwright is often confined to a seemingly endless series of play readings, half-baked workshop productions, and audience-feedback bull sessions that often culminate not in a real production but more of the same. Tonight a group of theater people get together to bitch have an exchange about this now-entrenched play development process. The symposium is moderated by Time Out NY theater critic David Cote and features Richard Nelson, Playwright and Chair of the Department of Playwriting at the Yale University School of Drama, playwright/13P co-founder Madeleine George, and dramaturg/theatrical agent Morgan Jenness. - John Del Signore more ›

THEATER: The Fringe Festival is over and pretty much every stage in town is dark tonight, but the Abingdon Theater Co. is producing a reading of Stephen Cone's Lacrimosa, about an famed evangelist and his wife who seclude themselves in their big mansion, thinking the Second Coming is near, but instead a strange girl arrives, and the evangelist's volatile brother, and with them all the problems and craziness of our mixed-up world, jolting them from their comfortable complacency. This reading will be even more interesting because minster and evangelical expert Cathy Gilliard is on hand for a talk-back. - Mallory Jensen more ›

THEATER: Both the Fringe Festival and the wildly successful, but once Fringe-y, 24 Hour Plays are celebrating their tenth anniversaries this year, so why not do it together? Starting tonight, some of the original cast members and plays from the series that proved that a gimmick (conceive, write, rehearse and perform a play in a day) can produce fresh theatre, reunite in five totally different sets of five. - Mallory Jensen more ›

Literati Roundup: Goodbye to Octavia Butler, and A Lot More

Before we get to the weekly events which are sure to dazzle and amaze, Gothamist would like to note the passing of one of the great science fiction writers, Octavia Butler. Butler died after falling down the stairs outside her home this weekend, and will be sorely missed. She's the only science-fiction writer to receive a MacArthur grant, and in a field dominated by men, Butler was a woman notable not only for her strong writing but also for the strong ideas behind it. Some fans of her work and life are gathering this Friday (3/3) at KGB Bar (85 E. 4th St.) at 7PM to raise a glass in her name and read from her work, and celebrate it. All are welcome. more ›

Literati Roundup: Love Stinks, Read Books!

So it's Valentine's Day. And if you're not busy cavorting with your Sweet Baboo in a gushy fountain of chocolate and self-satisfaction, consider feeding your snark instead, with Love Stinks: Tales of Hook-ups and Heartbreak, a reading all about the ugly side of cupid from the mouth of babes - well, by babes we mean some very funny authors and comedians like Marcy Dermansky and Heather Fink. The reading starts at 7:30PM at Mo Pitkin's (34 Ave A) and it's brought to you by the same people that produce Chicks and Giggles. Oh, and like heartbreak, it's free. more ›

We Hate Hearts: Valentine's Day Events

We Hate Hearts: Valentine's Day Events

Valentine's day. We're on the fence. Getting flowers is nice, but we also like getting flowers on the 13th and 15th. Overall there is too much pressure put on the day, on singles and couples alike, and we hate when companies use it to wrangle up the former and pour lemon juice cocktails into their wounded, bleeding, unloved hearts (ahem, Fresh Direct). more ›

Precocious Children, After Dark

Remember back in December when the Post took a look at the faux-nightclub for teens, Crush? And then how Gawker had its fun ripping apart excruciatingly irritating promoter, Lizzie Grubman's "16-year-old socialite-private-school-jappy-spoiled-Upper-East-Side intern," Lexi Lehman? more ›

Untitled Readings, Plus Showgirls and Pajamas

Untitled Readings, Plus Showgirls and Pajamas

Gothamist loves that “before they were famous” kind of celebrity trivia. The jobs that pre-celebrities held down, the apartments they lived in, that meager road they traveled on their way to the paparazzi-and-Bungalow 8-filled highway. We love knowing that maybe some of the performers we watch in the back of a bar or in a theater above a sushi restaurant might someday be propelled to that level of success and we are lucky to have so many opportunities to see their works in progress. The Untitled Readings at Galapagos [70 N. 6th St., Williamsburg] is a workshop of sorts for aspiring actors, screenwriters and filmmakers. Up-and-coming actors perform ten pages of works by up-and-coming writers onstage, brought to life possibly for the very first time. Submissions for future shows are also currently being accepted if you, too, have aspirations of fame or at least seeing your works performed by real live actors. Thursday at 8pm, free. more ›

Literati Roundup: Starting the New Year with a whimper

Literati Roundup: Starting the New Year with a whimper

Since it's obviously National Hangover Week and no one does hangovers better than New York artists, it's a rather slow week (again!) in readings and literary events. Next week looks like it's picking up a fair bit, though, and we're excited about several events, so tune in next Tuesday. more ›

Miscellaneous Shows of the Comedy Variety

Miscellaneous Shows of the Comedy Variety

Today Gothamist has quite the conundrum on its hands…with so many good shows happening this week all over our fair city, how do we narrow it all down? There’s a bit of a hodge-podge of things happening tonight, so rather than file them all under comedy, it’s probably safer to refer to them as a canon of miscellany. more ›

Drink Up: Gothamist Drinks Something New at Mo Pitkins

During this week we were reminded of a few things: New York bars don't close for anyone's holidays, apples and honey go very well with Manhattans, and we should probably pick up some kosher wine in case family drops by. After moving recently, we realized we must have had this idea every year since, oh, 5761, because there were a half dozen not-exactly-empty bottles of Manischewitz. We've never even had good luck adding it to sangria - it's a problem. more ›

A Taste of Fall

A Taste of Fall

Fall is here, and you know what that means -- Fall restaurant preview time. From what we've read in New York Metro and the New York Times, it looks like we've got a lot to look forward to, including openings from not one but two Iron Chefs -- Batali's Del Posto (85 10th Avenue) and Morimoto's Morimoto (88 10th Avenue). Gothamist is pretty excited about a few others, including Bar Carrera (175 Second Avenue), from Bar Veloce's Fred Twomey, who told us about his new Spanish wine and small plates venture a few months ago at a Spanish wine event; the Fatty Crab (643 Hudson St), the latest from 5 Ninth's Zak Pelaccio, which will dabble in Asian street foods, including Jalan Alor chicken wings and chili crabs served with white bread; and Mo Pitkin's House of Satisfaction (34 Avenue A), serving a Jewish/Latin menu, which we have to try, if for no other reason, than to taste the Manischevitini, a cocktail made with Manischewitz wine - what would our bubbes think? Then again, any spot where chopped liver, chorizo meatballs, and crab-stuffed deviled eggs can share the same plate is worth a visit. Mo Pitkin's is open; the others are scheduled to open this month, but you know how that goes. more ›

Colbert Tickets and More

Colbert Tickets and More

Obviously Labor Day is the weekend to kick back and squeeze out the final drops of summer before retiring your Nantucket Reds in favor of muted browns and tweeds. Obviously. And obviously the last thing you ought to do on a weekend such as this is put any effort into anything. However, Gothamist highly recommends you take action as soon as possible to snag the now-on-sale tickets to see Elliot Kalan’s interview with Stephen Colbert at Juvie Hall. The show will take place on September 9th but tickets are available and selling quickly now at SmartTix. Long live Mr. Noblet! more ›

Mo Pitkin's House of Satisfaction

Mo Pitkin's House of Satisfaction

So we know that David Cross and Co. have bought the bar "Eleven" on Orchard Street, it was only inevitable that younger, more energetic comedian Jimmy Fallon has beat him to the punch by already opening the doors to his very own performance space: Mo Pitkin's House of Satisfaction [as reported on the Apiary]. Okay maybe he's not more energetic, we don't know, we're basing this on the fact that Fallon danced a lot at the Scissor Sisters show last week. Cross, on the other hand, usually stands disaffectedly in the crowd at shows, blending nicely with the rest of the jaded music fans in this city. more ›
