Last week, the Jets warmed up for their road game against the Vikings by showing up on Sesame Street. Head Coach Eric Mangini has a son who loves the show. Chad Pennington, Laveranues Coles and, most interestlingly, Australian punter Ben Graham all shared the Queens sound stage with Elmo. The Jets make their only Monday Night Football appearance -- and will probably get higher ratings than the Seasame Street episode -- when they face the Dolphins in Miami on Christmas Day.
Well, stick a fork in Monday Night Football, because just about the only thing you might recognize next season is the theme song and maybe Hank Williams, Jr. Only a few short days after Al Michaels called Superbowl XL, ABC and Michaels have parted ways. Michaels has been with Monday Night Football on ABC since 1986 and was reportedly reluctant to move to ESPN's MNF coverage after most of the MNF team decided to move to NBC's Sunday night coverage. It is expected that NBC Michaels will soon announce that he is joining their coverage.
So far we've found nothing funny about the month of January, hopefully things will change starting this week. Check out our comedy picks:
Dominated every which way it seemed, the Jets managed to make a 31-21 loss to New England look a bit closer after two late TD receptions by Laveranues Coles, but it was clear that Monday night's broadcast was interesting for one reason only – it was the final Monday Night Football on network television.
When the Jets host defending Super Bowl champion New England tonight, it will be the final Monday Night Football game as we know it – ABC will move the longest running show in prime time over to ESPN at the start of the 2006 season as NBC's Sunday night package becomes the league's new showcase, with an contractual ability to move choice games from Sunday afternoon to Sunday night on short notice.
In the final Monday Night Football game with a network audience, the Jets take on New England next week.
It will be a surreal scene at Giants Stadium Monday Night. Because of the devastation from Hurricane Katrina, the New Orleans Saints were unable to play in the Superdome and the NFL decided to move the Saints “home” opener to New Jersey. So, you will see the Saints logo in the end zones and the Giants wearing their road uniforms while playing at Giants Stadium in a game that will start at 7:30pm on a Monday. For local fans used to being unable to attend games, tickets are still available.
Everyone who follows the Yankees could see that a shakeup was coming. The team looked lifeless for most of the season and Bernie Williams could simply not throw the baseball anymore, but this is a bigger shakeup than anyone foresaw. Moving Womack to left is a huge gamble, as he has never played there. Matsui in center should be an improvement, but his arm is nothing to write home about. Getting rid of Karsay is a case of addition by subtraction, but the Yankees still have too many relievers. One can only assume that General Manager, Brian Cashman, surveyed the trade market and didn’t find anything to his liking, so he employed the Yankees’ greatest weapon, money.
Sure, Albert was biting the hand that fed him, but who is James Dolan kidding? Has he seen the Knicks of late? They deserve criticism. Leafing through the paper this morning, Gothamist was shocked, stunned, shaking our heads. But what do we know? All we know is that Knick broadcasts will not be the same.
