Late last week, the body of a teenaged girl was found in a trash bag on a Brooklyn sidewalk. Her mother had reported Chanel Petro-Nixon missing on Monday June 19, after Chanel left her Bed-Stuy house on Sunday and never returned. The police said that the straight-A student at Boys and Girls High School was strangled, but not sexually assaulted. Her family and friends had differing ideas of where she might have gone - some said she wanted to apply for a job while others said she was meeting a boyfriend. The manager of an Applebee's says detectives have spoken to him about the girl, saying she never showed up to apply for a job. But now many people to wonder how Chanel could have disappeared, as she would have walked along Fulton Street at a busy time. A woman who works on Fulton Street told the Daily News, "Her disappearance doesn't make sense. It just doesn't add up."

Gothamist went to poetry slams in high school to feel artistic and deep. But then we realized we didn’t have what it takes to be a poet, all we wanted was to laugh at how serious some people took themselves. Granted that’s our own shortcoming and perhaps we need to work on getting in touch with our emotions, but tonight it is ok to laugh at the poets at Galapagos. At the Poetry Vs. Comedy Variety Show poets rage against comedians in a battle of wits. Featuring poets Scotty The Blue Bunny, Nathan Penlington and Thaddeus Rutkowski and comedians Carolyn Castiglia, Jon Friedman and Becky Yamamoto.
Gothamist liked the Futureheads WAY before we heard them on the OC, which means we're very excited they'll be playing an intimate acoustic show at Pianos on Monday June 6th prior to their big Webster Hall show.
Due to our love of music, arts and everything visual, audible and touchable...Gothamist attends many events. We go, we learn, we feel happy/sad/enlightened and we report back to you. Prior to all of this going down however, we like to pick some events we intend to go to in the future and do a quick background or overview of what it's all about.
